The 2015 animated movie revolved around the inner emotions of young girl Riley as she struggles to adjust to her family’s cross-country move to San Francisco. Amy Poehler led the star-studded roster of the original Inside Out alongside Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan. As part of the D23 Expo, Disney and Pixar (via Tessa Smith) officially announced Inside Out 2. The studio also revealed the first story details for the sequel, with the film continuing the journey through Riley’s mind as she gets new emotions and enters her teenage years. Check out the announcement below:

Disney and Pixar’s official confirmation of Inside Out 2 comes on the heels of reports indicating that the animated sequel would be announced as part of the D23 Expo. Interestingly, said report also indicated that prior stars Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader would not be reprising their roles of Disgust and Fear for the film, with sources stating a contract dispute between the two stars led to their departures, despite the studio’s reported increasing of their offer. With Amy Poehler teasing new emotions to be introduced during the Inside Out 2 announcement, it is sure to leave some wondering whether this is a change in plans after Kaling and Hader’s exits, or if this was always the plan for the film.

Inside Out 2 marks an interesting return to franchise filmmaking for Pixar, who often touted their interest in developing original films rather than sequels or prequels to their works. The studio sole expansions initially lied in the Toy Story and Cars franchises until producing Monsters University, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2 and Lightyear. While audiences wait to see how it fares against Pixar’s other sequels, and its fellow puberty-inspired Turning Red, they can revisit the original Inside Out streaming on Disney+ now.
