Details Of Saraya’s AEW Contract Revealed & Imply She Could Wrestle

Over the last week, AEW fans have been clamoring for details about Saraya following her debut on Dynamite. Her contract status was recently reported.

Since Saraya made her debut on the September 21 episode of AEW Wednesday Night Dynamite, details about her on-screen role have been limited. A week later, her debut video has racked up more than 1.5 million views on YouTube, making it clear that fans were excited to see the former WWE women’s champion pop up during Grand Slam. A feud with Britt Baker was seemingly teased, but the interaction between the two was limited.

Saraya hasn’t wrestled a match since December of 2017 due to a lingering neck injury and didn’t get involved physically during her first appearance in AEW. The lack of contact made some speculate that the former Paige hadn’t been cleared for action yet and that she might have an on-screen authority role like she did while still in WWE. Either way, she’d be an excellent signing for Tony Khan but would have a much more significant impact as an in-ring performer.

A recent report by Fightful Select indicates that Saraya is set to be with AEW for the foreseeable future. “Sources familiar with the situation tell Fightful Select that Saraya has agreed to a three-year contract with AEW,” says the report. “We are not sure if there are option years at play, as is often the case with AEW. However, we’re told for the amount of money it was signed for ‘largely implies that she’ll be wrestling in some capacity.’ We haven’t been given any indication of whether or not she’s been cleared…

Saraya Would Give AEW More Star Power

There’s a reason that former WWE wrestlers have been trusted to carry the ball for All Elite Wrestling since its inception. The performers from that company bring more star power, which generally shakes out in the quarterly ratings. The likes of Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page are draws to some degree, but they don’t generate as much interest as Chris Jericho, CM Punk, or Jon Moxley. Saraya can bring that kind of star power to a women’s division that desperately needs it if she’s cleared and healthy, which is still a question leading up to the September 28 episode of Dynamite.

AEW has struggled to make women’s wrestling matter to its viewers. It’s not given the same level of respect as many of the men’s feuds, and the audience treats it the same way. Only by changing how the division is handled on air can Khan hope to shift the perception of his women’s division. It takes time and effort, and having a professional like Saraya trot out every week will be massively important for AEW moving forward, especially if she’s cleared to wrestle again.
