Exclusive Maria Bakalova teases her Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 character Cosmo and shares her excitement about joining her favorite MCU franchise.
Maria Bakalova teases new details about Cosmo in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 and shares her excitement about joining her favorite MCU franchise. Cosmo first appeared in the MCU in Guardians Of The Galaxy in The Collector’s Museum on Knowhere. Cosmo managed to survive multiple attacks against the museum and eventually joined the Guardians of the Galaxy after they purchased Knowhere from the Collector as their new base of operations. The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special establishes Cosmo as part of the team as she uses her telekinetic abilities to help Rocket rebuild Knowhere.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about her new movie, The Honeymoon, Bakalova shares some exciting new details about Cosmo, including the real dog that she was based on. She also revealed that Guardians Of The Galaxy was what initially drew her into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a fan. Bakalova explained why working on Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 has been one of her “favorite experiences.”
Maria Bakalova: The power of believing in things that James Gunn has reminded me why I wanted to follow acting. It’s this idea of escaping and being someone else and seeing things that usually you cannot really see in reality. So, Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of my favorite experiences, to be honest. I’m supposed to be voicing a character, but I couldn’t separate myself from being around all of these people. I’ve just been lucky to be around good people, and it’s been just wonderful to work with them.
Guardians of Galaxy was the movie that made me get excited about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and seeing all of these comics externalized. It’s been spectacular, and I’m very happy and pleased that James did something important. He transformed the character of Cosmo into the original prototype of Laika, which was the first dog that was sent to the cosmos of space. It’s been interesting, and I think she’s going to be one of the beloved characters in the universe.
What Role Could Cosmo Play In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
Cosmo is an intriguing addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy, with the space dog being peripherally included in every Guardians Of The Galaxy movie. Basing Cosmo on the actual cosmonaut canine, Laika, ties her to Earth, while her powers could tie her into the larger story of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, involving the High Evolutionary. The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special sets up a bond between Rocket and Cosmo as they work together to rebuild Knowhere using Cosmo’s telekinetic abilities and decorate Groot as a Christmas tree. Although Cosmo isn’t featured heavily in the Holiday Special it establishes how she could fit into the team and the bond she has already formed with Rocket.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will explore Rocket’s origins. Rocket isn’t the only anthropomorphized animal that will be a part of the new movie, with the trailer featuring an alien world full of strange humanized animals and the otter Lylla. While Cosmo isn’t quite the same as these characters, her powers do set her apart from other earthly animals. She could potentially be another experiment of the High Evolutionary’s. During Screen Rant’s exclusive interview with Chukwudi Iwuji at San Diego Comic-Con about the High Evolutionary, he teased that his new MCU villain has ties to a number of characters in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 beyond Rocket.
Cosmo could be an integral part of discovering more about Rocket’s origins and the High Evolutionary. She may also be the key to defeating the genius mad scientist with her telekinetic powers, which set her apart from the other Guardians, who rely heavily on their physical fighting abilities. It is also possible that Cosmo’s true potential hasn’t been fully realized. She seemed to be struggling with her telekinetic powers, but in the comics, Cosmo has powerful psionic abilities, including telekinesis as well as telepathy and psychic shields. Cosmo could prove to be a powerful secret weapon in the Guardians’ arsenal in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 as they face off against a formidable enemy.
