Tobey Maguire Passes Out Champagne At A Babylon Screening In New Video

During an early screening of Damien Chazelle’s new early Hollywood epic Babylon, star Tobey Maguire arrives to pass out bottles of champagne.

Babylon star Tobey Maguire passed out champagne at a screening of the new film. The project is the latest from decorated director Damien Chazelle, whose previous three films, Whiplash, La La Land, and First Man, were all nominated for multiple Oscars. Babylon is set during the early days of Hollywood, as silent cinema was giving way to sound, and features an ensemble cast that, in addition to Maguire, includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li playing a variety of characters inspired by real-life classic film figures.

Now, the Twitter account for Babylon shares a video of Maguire making an appearance at an early screening ahead of the official Babylon release on December 23. After cracking a joke about making sure everyone in the audience was 21, he handed out mini-bottles of champagne before the film. This is in keeping with the film’s overall theme of Hollywood Bacchanalia, though the bottles were small enough that viewers weren’t encouraged to drink to quite the excess of the characters on screen. Who Is Tobey Maguire Playing In Babylon?

Tobey Maguire as James McKay in Babylon

Maguire is an iconic actor who has most recently been seen reprising his original role as the Sam Raimi trilogy’s Peter Parker in the 2021 multiverse-colliding box office smash MCU movie Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although from the trailers it seems like his part here is as a supporting character, his performance seems to be a far cry from what fans might expect from him. He will be playing mob boss James McKay, a loan shark and adrenaline junkie whose massive party will become the set piece for some of the movie’s most harrowing and thrilling debauchery. He may be inspired by the real-life Reno gambling kingpin of the same name.

So far, not too many details have been revealed as to exactly how Maguire’s character functions in the plot of Babylon. However, one scene of his has been featured prominently in the Babylon trailer. In it, he sits across from Calva’s character Manny, and his outwardly friendly demeanor is undercut by his creepy laugh and bloodshot eyes, as well as the fact that his teeth seem to be stained, potentially with food or alcohol, but most likely with blood.

Babylon Has Critics Very Divided So Far

So far, Babylon has proven to be a critically divisive film, as reviewers find themselves torn between whether the messiness of the plot and three-hour run time detract too much from its overall star-studded spectacle. However, the stars, including Maguire and Robbie (who has said this film is her “proudest work“) seem to be having a blast with the film, which may still translate into overall audience interest. The film was also nominated for five awards at the 2023 Golden Globes, which could help boost its box office.
