WrestleMania 38 happened in April, but WWE star Kevin Owens still isn’t quite sure how he ended up face-to-face with Stone Cold Steve Austin at the event. The two men main evented the second night of the Showcase of the Immortals, putting on a remarkably entertaining no holds barred match. It was so outstanding that WWE is reportedly attempting to lure the Texas Rattlesnake back for one more go-around at WrestleMania 39. That may or may not happen, but Owens is still gobsmacked that he got to wrestle Stone Cold in the first place.
Speaking with Ryan Glasspiegel of The New York Post, Owens said the following about that dream-come-true match from his perspective. “I still don’t have a full grasp on how that happened. All I know is I was told by several people, from Steve to Vince McMahon to Bruce Prichard, it couldn’t have been anybody other than you — meaning me — with Steve.” Owens continued, revealing that “I’m not sure who suggested it, who asked for it or how it came about. One day I’ll find out. But the point is that it’s extremely flattering to me that those three all thought I was the best choice. There’s really no higher compliment than that for me.“
Kevin Owens’ 2022 Has Been Full Of Surreal Moments
2022 will probably always be remembered as the year of Roman Reigns, but Kevin Owens has had a stellar run over the last 365 days. He might not have spent time as the unified champion, but he’s still had a year chock-full of some of the most memorable moments of his career. His match against Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 38 chief among them. Owens deserves a ton of credit for making that program work because it was just him and a live microphone for the majority of the build. Steve Austin was involved in some vignettes, but fans had to wait until ‘Mania to see the two get physical.
Not only was their match better than it had any right to be, but Kevin Owens is now ending the year tagging with John Cena. That’s surreal since Owens made his main-roster debut against Cena in May 2015. Reigns challenged Owens to a tag-team match on the final SmackDown of 2022, and wouldn’t you know it? The unseeable one himself was available for the December 30 show. Cena has yet to wrestle a match this year, but that will change just two days before the calendar rolls into 2023.
From his match against Stone Cold to tag-teaming with John Cena against arguably the biggest pro wrestling star today in Reigns, it’s been an eventful year for Kevin Owens. With Triple H holding the book now, that bodes well for his 2023 and beyond. There have been rumblings about Owens and Sami Zayn perhaps teaming up at WrestleMania 39 against the Usos. Regardless of what match KO ends up securing this year, it’ll pale compared to his fight against Stone Cold Steve Austin a year ago.
