Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard is transformed into the MCU’s Nightmare in new Doctor Strange fan art, which imagines the actor as a future antagonist.
A new piece of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness art depicts Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard as the Marvel villain Nightmare in the MCU. Skarsgard portrayed Pennywise the Dancing Clown in 2017’s It and the 2019 follow-up It Chapter Two, earning acclaim for his successful turn as the Stephen King villain. The actor has since played a small part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the voice of antagonist Kro in 2021’s Eternals, responsible for killing Ajak (Salma Hayek) in the film.
Now Skarsgard is imagined as a different Marvel villain, placing him in Doctor Strange as the Fear Lord Nightmare. In Marvel Comics, Nightmare is a formidable and all-powerful demon that rules a pocket of the Dream Dimension known as the Nightmare Realm. The character, who can never be completely destroyed, was initially set to be the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) became the main antagonist. Now, digital creator 83 Pixel Studios has posted an image via Instagram depicting Skarsgard as the demon in a potential future Doctor Strange film. See the post below:
Why Nightmare Didn’t Appear In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
When Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill were still at the helm of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, their plans included Nightmare as the villain of the sequel. This reportedly shifted when Sam Raimi and Michael Waldron took over and had Scarlet Witch serve as the film’s antagonist instead. Wanda was an extremely chilling and heartbreaking villain whose emotional arc in the Doctor Strange sequel followed the tragic conclusion of WandaVision and opened up a larger exploration of the multiverse within the MCU.
While the introduction of Nightmare would have similarly expanded the MCU into a new dimension and provided plenty of opportunities for horror, the use of the villain would have lacked the human aspect which allowed Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to stop Wanda at the end of the film. Having Nightmare as the villain would have made Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a completely different film, delving into the MCU’s supernatural elements and likely not including the introduction of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Ultimately, the Doctor Strange sequel balanced many elements, and bringing in a completely new antagonist as well as delving into the supernatural side of the MCU may be best served for a future Doctor Strange installment.
Where Nightmare Could Appear In The MCU
Doctor Strange 3 has yet to be announced, but the ending of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness indicates that another film centered on the sorcerer is sure to follow. In addition, the connection between dreams and the multiverse in the Doctor Strange sequel could serve as a potential setup for the role of Nightmare in the MCU in a possible third film. With the MCU’s supernatural characters being explored in more depth in Phases 5 and 6 with projects such as Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Blade, there are several opportunities for Nightmare to show up in upcoming MCU television shows or films.
