Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery writer/director Rian Johnson addresses whether Miles Bron is based on Elon Musk. A standalone sequel to 2019’s Knives Out, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery brings back Daniel Craig’s master detective Benoit Blanc as he takes on a new case involving tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) who invites his sycophantic friends to an island in Greece for a murder mystery party. Since Glass Onion debuted on December 17 on Netflix, the internet has been a buzz with discussion about whether Miles (whose companies include Alpha Cosmos, Alpha Car, and Alpha Shop) is actually based on real-world tech billionaire Elon Musk.
During a recent interview with Wired, Johnson addressed whether Miles Bron is based on Elon Musk. The Glass Onion writer/director says the character of Miles was meant to parody the current breed of tech billionaire in general, not just Musk, and the Knives Out sequel debuting on Netflix at the same as Musk’s disastrous Twitter takeover is just a “horrible accident.” Read what Johnson said below:
It’s so weird. It’s very bizarre. I hope there isn’t some secret marketing department at Netflix that’s funding this Twitter takeover. There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into [the movie]. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment. A friend of mine said, “Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.” And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know?
Who Every Glass Onion Character Is Based On Explained
As Johnson explains, Edward Norton’s Miles Bron isn’t meant to be a one-for-one stand-in for Musk, but rather an amalgam of tech billionaires. This could also include Steve Jobs (considering Miles dons a black turtleneck), Jeff Bezos, and to a lesser extent, Bill Gates. If Miles Bron is the Steve Jobs of Alpha per se, Leslie Odom Jr.’s Lionel Toussaint would be the company’s Steve Wozniak, a.k.a. the engineering and scientific brains of the operation.
However, Miles and Lionel aren’t the only Glass Onion characters who take inspiration from real-world personalities. Almost every one of Miles Bron’s friends and invitees – including Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), and Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) – are based on real-life figures in some way. Similar to Miles, Bautista’s Duke Cody is based on the plethora of video game streamers and men’s rights activists who have gained popularity online, though audiences have pointed out that Duke, due to his fair share of controversies, bears a striking resemblance to Joe Rogan or perhaps less favorable to him, Andrew Tate.
Hudson’s Birdie Jay is another character who overtly parallels real-life celebrities, namely the Kardashians. Rather than taking aim at anyone, in particular, Hahn’s Claire Debella acts as a general commentary on corrupt politicians. For each of the aforementioned main Glass Onion characters, Johnson does not simply take inspiration from one famous person in particular, but rather a celebrity archetype that audiences can recognize, giving Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery a certain topicality it otherwise wouldn’t have as a straightforward whodunit.
