A new image from Scream VI reveals the Ghostface killer in New York City. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with a screenplay written by James Vanderblit and Gary Busick, Scream VI will see Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), alongside Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy Meeks (Jasmin Savoy Brown), move away from Woodsboro to New York City, where a new Ghostface killer starts to terrorize them. Courteney Cox will also reprise her role as Gale Weathers and will be joined by Hayden Panettiere, who returns to the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed after being introduced in 2011’s Scream 4.
Now, USA Today reveals a brand-new image for the upcoming Scream sequel, where Ghostface seems to look over the city. The image does not reveal much, but it does signal that, even if the main protagonists are trying to leave past events from 2022’s Scream behind, a new Ghostface killer can emerge anywhere they go. How Scream 6’s New Setting Could Change The Franchise
While it’s not the first time that the Scream franchise has moved away from Woodsboro, with the second and thid films taking place elsewhere, Scream VI‘s Big Apple setting seems to take the franchise into a bigger direction. New York City is heavily populated, with millions of people flocking the streets every single day. That setting could allow Scream VI to have a higher body count than the previous five installments, while also crafting bigger set pieces that ultimately lead to the murder of certain characters. The first trailer teased a set piece in New York’s subway during rush hour, signaling that the filmmakers could use the claustrophobia of so many people inside a subway train for gorier, and possibly more cathartic, set pieces.
The franchise moving to New York also recalls a previous horror series that did the same thing: Friday the 13th. Since the Scream franchise is also known for its meta-references to other horror films, it wouldn’t be surprising if the characters make a comment or two about a masked killer haunting them in the streets of Manhattan. The Ghostface killer is seemingly making the same change Jason once did, which could be the sequel’s biggest meta moment in a franchise that never shied away from highlighting the redundant tropes of horror movies.
While it’s still unclear how Scream VI‘s latest setting will play out in the upcoming sequel, it could very much change the franchise in some capacity. The directors had previously stated that this installment would be the biggest yet. The New York City setting could very much give the filmmakers an excuse for set pieces with many victims who get viciously killed by the Ghostface killer, while the main protagonists are once again being terrorized by a mantle that will seemingly never die. Time will tell who the next Ghostface killer will be when Scream VI moves the franchise to New York City this March.
