Glass Onion sees the return of Daniel Craig as private investigator Benoit Blanc at the center of another befuddling crime when billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his friends to his private island for a weekend getaway. After the true killer was revealed as the idiotic Miles, the billionaire destroys the only physical evidence connecting him to Andi Brand’s (Janelle Monáe) earlier murder and the death of his friend Duke Cody (Dave Bautista). With encouragement from Blanc, Andi’s twin sister Helen (Monáe) takes matters into her own hands and destroys the numerous glass sculptures on display. Eventually, the rest of the friend group joins in, smashing anything in arm’s reach. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson explained that Jessica Henwick, who played Birdie’s (Kate Hudson) assistant Peg, accidentally dropped one of the glass sculpture’s during rehearsal, a prop that had no replacement. Henwick was horrified and admitted, “I broke into a cold sweat. I still have nightmares about that moment.” Read what Johnson said about the incident below:

“One of my favorite moments was Jess had a massive one that she got to smash, and she was so excited. It’s a massive wheel of glass. We start rolling the camera, and I’m saying to her, ‘Okay, we want to get this exactly right. We only have one of these. And so what I’m going to do is I’m going to say one, two, three.’ She drops it and then looks right into the camera and does this [makes a shocked face]. We had started the camera just to practice the thing. She broke it and then looked right in the camera. That’s the take that’s in the movie.”

Why The Glass Breaking Scene Was Important In Glass Onion

Glass Onion Knives Out Peg Shocked

With Andi long dead and the killer standing just feet from her, getting away with yet another crime, Helen felt like she had no other option but to exact retribution of any kind. Smashing the glass was not only cathartic for Helen, someone who had to pretend to be her sister and deal with a group of self-absorbed narcissists, but also as a way to ruin the man who had torn apart her sister’s life. Miles’ island was an extension of his ego, destroying it was destroying a part of him.

Using Klear, the dangerous hydrogen-based alternative fuel to destroy the Glass Onion, was a way for Helen to help her sister get revenge against Miles as well. Klear could have been a game-changer in the alternative fuel industry, making trillions of dollars for Miles and Andi’s company. However, Andi saw the incredible danger Klear was in its current stage. Miles removed her as CEO of the company and persuaded his friends to turn on Andi in a court of law to allow Klear to be sold. Igniting the Klear crystal to set ablaze the hydrogen powering Glass Onion, destroying the actual Mona Lisa in the process, not only damaged Miles’ product and company, but also helped turn Andi’s old colleagues against Miles.

Blanc knew the lengths that Helen could go to get her revenge against Miles. Giving her the glass of alcohol and the Klear while reminding her of why her sister walked away in the first place gave Helen the final push to take action. After uncovering scandals and criminal coverups, the core mystery of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was undone by a sister’s love.
