Scream 5 star Jenna Ortega has found herself on the receiving end of an ominous message from the franchise killer Ghostface, after the actress took to social media to celebrate the one-year anniversary of her series debut. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the fifth installment in the long-running horror franchise, simply titled Scream, saw the introduction of several new characters including Melissa Barrera’s Sam and her younger sister Tara, played by Wednesday star Ortega. Garnering positive reviews upon its release, another sequel was greenlit just weeks after the fifth Scream film was released in theaters, with the forthcoming Scream 6 currently planned to make its own debut in March this year.
With 2022’s Scream reaching its one-year anniversary, Ortega took to social media to wish the film a “happy birthday you big baby”. However, not content to let Ortega’s tweet go unnoticed, the Ghostface Twitter account replied by asking the rising star if she was “ready for round 2?”.
Ghostface’s message teases Ortega’s imminent return in the franchise’s next film, with the infamous killer now stalking his prey throughout New York City. Scream 6 will also feature the return of previous stars Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Hayden Panettiere, and Courteney Cox.
Will Jenna Ortega’s Tara Survive Scream 6?
Fresh off the success of Netflix’s Wednesday, Ortega’s star power has certainly begun to rise in recent months, adding to the success she has already enjoyed off her appearances in projects like 2022’s Scream and X. Moving into the hotly anticipated follow-up to last year’s slasher flick, Ortega’s character Tara now has the potential to step up and become a new franchise mainstay following Neve Campbell’s departure as Sidney Prescott. With Courtney Cox the only original Scream star remaining, it is more important than ever for the series to establish new recurring characters, and Ortega’s Tara and Barrera’s Sam seem like the logical choice.
Of course, Ortega’s rising popularity is no guarantee that her character will manage to survive the latest Ghostface killing spree. While the actress has hinted that Scream 6 will see Tara become a much more fully developed character than her previous outing, that does not necessarily mean she will live to see a seventh film. With last year’s outing killing off David Arquette’s fan favorite character Dewey, it was proven that no one is ever truly safe. Nonetheless, many fans seem to agree that Ortega’s ever-growing fan appeal would make her the ideal candidate to live on and co-lead the franchise far beyond this year’s Scream 6.
Everything We Know About Scream 6
Moving from Woodsboro to New York City, all signs seem to point to Scream 6 borrowing some of the plot points seen in 1997’s Scream 2. Previous set photos have teased the inclusion of a fictional college campus, dubbed Blackmore University, playing a key role in the new sequel. Much like Scream 2’s Windsor College, Blackmore University could potentially serve as a new home for Scream 5’s surviving characters as they seek to build a new life in the big city. However, history will not be so easily forgotten, as Cox’s Gale Weathers and Panettiere’s Scream 4 character Kirby both link the franchise’s blood soaked past to its metropolitan present. In the meantime, fans can relive all the heart stopping moments in Scream 5 while they wait for the latest entry to stab its way into theaters.
