Fury Of The Gods Is Cleverly Fixing A Shazam Family Problem

[ad_1]

Shazam!’s ending created a Shazam Family challenge for the sequel, and the latest Fury of the Gods trailers shows that it is being solved.

The second Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer hints at how the sequel will solve its Shazam Family challenge. Inspired by the New 52 rendition of the character, Shazam! introduced not only Billy Batson but also his family – who would also become Shazam warriors. While the Shazam Family only joined the action at the end of the first film to fight Doctor Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins, having six characters sharing the power of the Shazam champion is tricky as the new Fury of the Gods trailer proves.

Though the Shazam Family of superheroes is not always part of the Shazam stories in the comics, adapting that part of the character’s mythos was the right choice for the DCEU movie. Shazam! was about family, with Billy finding in his new home everything he had been looking for. Given how late in Shazam! Billy’s family gets powers, it was expected that the Shazam! Fury of the Gods would heavily feature the Shazam Family. The problem, however, is that having six characters with the same set of god-like superpowers in what is not expected to be a Justice League-level threat cannot work in the long term.

Hespera Is Taking The Shazam Family Powers Back

Hespera and Kalypso in Shazam Fury of the Gods

The Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer strongly suggests that Helen Mirren’s Hespera is taking away the Shazam Family’s powers one by one. Hespera transformed Freddy back to his non-superhero form right before saying “give us the powers, and the villain had previously mentioned in the trailer that her father’s powers had been stolen. Later in the trailer, Mary was hit by a similar magic beam and also reverted to her non-superhero form. By the end of the trailer, Billy Batson was challenging Hespera to a fight with no one at his side. All of those moments point to the Shazam Family losing their powers at some point.

Having Hespera chasing the Shazam Family to get the power of the gods back would make sense, and it would explain the title of the Shazam sequel being “Fury of the Gods.” In addition, having the Daughters of Atlas take the powers from the Shazam Family would avoid having six superheroes throughout the entire film, something that would make Fury of the Gods too convoluted. As fun as the Shazam Family is, Billy Batson should be the focus of the Shazam! sequel, especially because six superheroes fighting through the skies would quickly turn into a Justice League-level event. Shazam!’s simplicity added to the film and should be replicated.

Why Fury Of The Gods’ Solution To The Shazam Family Problem Works

Shazam Family with Mary Marvel DC Comics

The Shazam Family is part of Shazam’s mythos and a key part of the DCEU’s Shazam film, yet Fury of the Gods should not have to have six active superheroes all the way through. Essentially, not every superhero story needs to be a big crossover event like Justice League or The Avengers. Potentially removing the Shazam Family’s powers easily fixes that challenge without diminishing the importance of Billy’s family to the story. For example, Freddy was somehow involved in the action during some of the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer scenes despite not being in his superhero form. In addition, it raises the stakes for what Billy must face.
