Director David F. Sandberg breaks down how the dragon featured in Shazam! Fury of the Gods is different from those featured in Game of Thrones.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg that the dragon featured in his upcoming DCU movie is different from dragons featured in Game of Thrones-style fantasies in one cool way. After the success of the first Shazam! in 2019, Sandberg is reuniting with star Zachary Levi for a sequel. The upcoming movie follows teenage boy Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who has the power to turn into an adult superhero, as he faces off against the formidable Daughters of Atlas with the help of his foster family. In addition to Levi, Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Adam Brody, Djimon Hounsou, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Rachel Zegler, among others.

As revealed in the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer, the titular hero will have to face off against a dragon at several points in the film. In a recent interview with Total Film (via CBR), Sandberg breaks down why his dragon is different from those featured in fantasy franchises like Game of Thrones and The Hobbit. The biggest difference, by far, is that the dragon featured in Shazam! Fury of the Gods is made out of wood, Sandberg explains. The beasts also has a unique ability when fighting opponents. Check out Sandberg’s full comment below:

“With the dragon, it was like, ‘We’ve seen so many dragons, in Game Of Thrones and The Hobbit and all these things, so we have to do something different.’ He’s made out of wood because he was born from the Tree of Life — that’s what he protects. And he can emanate fear. If you’re standing in front of him, you won’t be able to move and he can go straight up and eat you.”

Why Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Has A Dragon

Lucy Liu using magic to grow a large tree in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

The central antagonists in Shazam! Fury of the Gods are the Daughters of Atlas, seemingly two, in particular, played by Mirren and Liu. Interestingly, Mirren’s Hespera and Liu’s Kalypso aren’t featured prominently in any DC comics and are characters more rooted in Greek mythology. The Daughters of Atlas, led by Hespera, lead a mission against Shazam to punish him for the power he stole from the gods, and this quest leads to some pretty epic encounters. As part of this quest, Kalypso unleashes mythological monsters upon Shazam and his city, which includes a giant wooden dragon.

The trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods even features Kalypso using a magical staff to grow a massive tree inside a sports stadium. The tree’s roots rip up the stadium’s playing field and stands, and even extend out into the streets beyond, tearing up the asphalt. With Sandberg’s reveal that the dragon in Shazam! Fury of the Gods is born from the Tree of Life, it’s possible that the giant tree Kalypso grows is exactly that. The trailer alone teases that both Hespera and Kalypso could be some of the strongest DCU villains featured in the franchise thus far, with the ability to summon fearsome mythological beasts sure to pose a significant threat to Shazam and his companions.

What the trailer doesn’t totally touch upon, however, is Sandberg’s claim that the dragon has the ability to freeze his victims by emanating fear. An earlier trailer featured a scene of Shazam throwing a car at the giant beast, suggesting that Levi’s hero may not be affected by this particular ability. While Zegler’s Athena remains a somewhat mysterious character, Sandberg’s comment, in addition to what is featured in the Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer, suggests that the movie’s villains are more rooted in mythology than DC comics, opening up a host of exciting possibilities.
