Stalled 9 To 5 Sequel Movie Gets Update From Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin

80 For Brady Stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda offer a somewhat vague update on the stalled sequel to their smash hit 1980 movie 9 to 5.

80 For Brady stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda offer an update on the long-stalled 9 to 5 sequel. Tomlin and Fonda were both superstars when they teamed up for the first time on 1980’s feminist comedy 9 to 5, co-starring their fellow superstar Dolly Parton. Since then, the Tomlin/Fonda pairing has come back for the Netflix comedy show Grace and Frankie, and for the brand-new comedy movie 80 For Brady.

But the one project Tomlin and Fonda’s fans have been waiting for the longest is a sequel to 9 to 5. Plans for a follow-up were indeed announced in 2018, but there have only been negative updates in the years since. Tomlin and Fonda unfortunately are not able to confirm that the 9 to 5 sequel is again happening, but they were able to offer somewhat of an update during a recent talk with ET to promote 80 For Brady. Check out what the pair had to say in the space below:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

TOMLIN: We always are holding that secret little sequel… We’re trying to make it happen before one of us checks out, so we hope we pull it off.

FONDA: We haven’t been able to get a script that we were satisfied with. If you don’t have the script, you can’t start.

Will A 9 To 5 Sequel Ever Happen?

Plans for a 9 to 5 sequel were first hatched way back in the 1980s, with the original film’s director Colin Higgins back in the fold and Superman writer Tom Mankiewicz tackling the script. Unfortunately, though Parton was high on the project, Fonda was not, and the plan fell apart. Nothing was heard of on the 9 to 5 sequel front again until the early 2000s when all three of the original movie’s stars expressed interest in returning.

Clearly the stars’ interest was not enough to create much urgent studio interest however, as nothing official was heard about a possible 9 to 5 sequel again until 2018, when Parton announced that the movie was happening. Fonda then confirmed her own involvement in the sequel, and later it was revealed that Rashida Jones and Pat Resnick were working on the script. Sadly, Parton herself shot down hopes of a 9 to 5 follow up the very next year when she said the sequel was no longer going forward.

But hopes of a 9 to 5 sequel still wouldn’t die in spite of Parton’s dire revelation, and indeed the flames only burned brighter after Parton joined Fonda and Tomlin for a 9 to 5 reunion in the final episode of Grace and Frankie. After the latest update from Fonda and Tomlin, it indeed seems that the door is still open on 9 to 5 getting a sequel, but it doesn’t sound like any official announcement is imminent. And clearly, the scripts that have been offered up over the years have not been satisfactory, particularly to Fonda, who continues to reiterate that she won’t do the sequel unless the material is worthy. This one sadly must be labeled up in the air, until something concrete comes to light.
