Exclusive: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed breaks down what sets Cassie Lang apart from the other young MCU heroes introduced.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed reveals what makes Cassie Lang different from the other new heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike many of the new heroes introduced in Phase Four, Cassie Lang has been a part of the MCU since the Infinity Saga in Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Avengers: Endgame. However, in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Cassie is a teenager who is stepping into her own as a hero.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Reed explains what sets Cassie Lang apart from the MCU’s other newly introduced young heroes. He breaks down who Cassie has grown up to be while Scott was stuck in the Quantum Realm for five years. Reed also discusses her arc in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Cassie really grows into her own as a character in Quantumania. What is the driving force that sets her apart from other young heroes that we’ve been introduced to in the MCU?
Peyton Reed: Cassie Lang, as we’ve seen in all the Ant-Man movies, is Scott Lang’s number one priority in life. He wants to be a good dad. In this movie, she’s 18 as a result of what happened in Endgame. Scott’s kind of still relating to her as a little girl, but she’s a young woman now. And as a young woman, she has her own ideas of what it’s like to be a hero, or what injustices in the world might need dealing with; her methods might be different than her dad’s.
She’s also at an age where she’s critical of her dad, but I think what sets her apart is that it’s a family business. She’s got Scott and Hope as a template, and she’s got Janet and Hank as a template. And she happens to be embedded with a handful of genius, Quantum scientists and a couple who synthesized the original Pym particle. But she’s just trying to figure it out, man. She’s just trying to figure out how to be a good citizen of the world and what that means.
Clearly, she’s gotten access to this technology and – we find out – a suit in this movie. But her arc is really that she’s an idealist, but now she’s plopped down into the middle of this war in the middle of the Quantum Realm, and her ideals are going to be put to the test. And that seems unique, I think, in the MCU in terms of these characters. She’s part of the family business but hasn’t quite figured it out yet.
Where Stature’s Story Can Go After Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Other heroes like Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, or She-Hulk are called to a life of heroism because they have powers. Meanwhile, Cassie saw her father as the Ant-Man save her from Yellowjacket and watched him fight alongside his Hope Van Dyne as Wasp and later the Avengers to save the universe. Cassie’s family is a superhero dynasty of brilliant heroes through Scott, Hope, Hank, and Janet. As a young adult finding her place in the world, it makes sense that becoming a hero would feel like Cassie’s next step, especially if she has inherited Scott’s need to help people and fight injustice.
Cassie is a different type of hero because, unlike the others, she instantly has a support system that can understand why she wants to do this and help her. Although Scott likely isn’t happy that she wants to follow in his footsteps because of what it has cost him, he will also probably understand why she wants to do this. While other heroes are on their own with their powers or desire to help Cassie isn’t and her desire to be a hero could in part stem from how often Scott did have to leave her because he’s Ant-Man.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the first step in Cassie’s quest to become Stature as she goes on her first adventure with Scott, Hope, Hank, and Janet instead of being left behind. From here, she could continue to work with them, learn from them, and grow into her own. Eventually, this could lead her to teaming up with other heroes like the Young Avengers or the new Avengers team or teams in Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
