Sylvester Stallone shares notes for the movie that would have been Rocky 7. Stallone seems to have officially left the Rocky/Creed franchise behind after bowing out of the latest installment Creed 3. But it’s clear that the series he kicked off with 1976’s original Rocky, and kept alive through five sequels and the first two Creed films, is still very near and dear to his heart.
Stallone indeed just had occasion to reminisce about the Rocky series again, posting on Instagram about his unrealized plans for Rocky 7, before hastily deleting the post. As part of the posting (via Collider), the actor shared artwork from painter Jon Rivoli along with notes from his never-made Rocky sequel. In his own summary of the pages, Stallone explained “I think you get the idea. Rocky was back trying to fight for the neighborhood that made him and that he still loves.” Among the revelations from Stallone’s jottings are the following interesting bits:
- Rocky is still running Adrian’s Restaurant, the eatery he opened after the death of his wife.
- A scene that is either Rocky remembering Adrian or imagining a conversation with her.
- Rocky goes to a boxing club where he sees a 27-year-old fighter named Chucho the Mutt (perhaps the fighter he would have mentored in the story, much as he did Adonis in Creed).
Why Rocky 7 Never Happened (And Who Stallone Blames For It)
Stallone has made no bones about who he blames for Rocky 7 never coming to fruition. In the actor’s eyes, the fault lies with Irwin Winkler, the producer he first teamed up with on the original Rocky. In public statements made last year, Stallone accused Winkler of withholding rights to the Rocky character, saying in an interview with THR, “It was a deal that was done unbeknownst to me by people that I thought were close to me, and they basically gave away whatever rights I would have had.”
Stallone indeed went after Winkler again in his new now-deleted posting, saying the following:
“This was the beginning EXCERPTS of screenplay for ROCKY 7, sadly because certain individuals, it will never happen, but it’s something I want to share with the diehard fans. Always Keep punching. Painting by @john_rivoli. #Irwinsfault.”
Stallone did of course play Rocky two times after the series transitioned into Creed. But he’s not back for Creed III, explaining last year that he disagrees with the direction in which the franchise has been taken by Winkler and Michael B. Jordan, saying of the new movie, “I like my heroes getting beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space.” Sadly, it seems that because of all this behind-the-scenes maneuvering and dealing, Rocky 7 will never come to fruition. But Stallone clearly has ideas for the sequel, and perhaps a Rocky-like comeback miracle can still take place, giving him one last chance to bring Rocky Balboa to life on screen.
