The new Silent Hill movie, Return to Silent Hill, gets an exciting filming update a few months after it was confirmed to be in the works.

With just over a decade gone since the last film came out, the new Silent Hill movie has gotten an exciting filming update. Based on the Konami survival horror video game franchise of the same name, the film franchise first launched with the eponymous 2006 adaptation co-written and directed by Christophe Gans. Though poorly received by critics, its financial success led to the ordering of the 2012 sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, which performed even weaker at the box office and in reviews.

A few months after it was first confirmed to be in the works, Deadline has offered an exciting Return to Silent Hill filming update. Though not revealing a specific production window for the next installment in the horror franchise, it has been confirmed that shooting is set to “get underway soon” on the new movie. The report also confirms that producer Victor Hadida, brother of the original film’s producer Samuel, is handling the project alongside Molly Hassell, with international sales currently underway.

Gans has discussed his desire for a third Silent Hill movie since 2020, in which he revealed he had been penning scripts for both it and a Fatal Frame movie adaptation. This past June saw Gans offer a promising update on the film by indicating the success of the Resident Evil 2 game remake inspired Konami to revive the franchise, later confirmed in October when the studio announced plans in a sizzle reel for both a Silent Hill 2 game remake and a new film, with Gans returning as co-writer and director.

The previously released video indicated that Gans and his creative team would primarily be pulling from the story of Silent Hill 2 for the plot of the new Silent Hill movie, centering on a young man who heads to the titular town in search of his lost love. Gans’ original film acted as a somewhat loose interpretation of the original Silent Hill game, though flipping the story to focus on Rose Da Silva as she searches for her missing daughter in the town, rather than Harry Mason. The poorly received second film, Silent Hill: Revelation, attempted to bridge this gap by adapting the events of Silent Hill 3 and renaming Sean Bean’s character to Harry Mason, though was still considered too convoluted.

The confirmation that Return to Silent Hill will begin filming soon marks an interesting update in its development, as some reports indicated it would’ve kicked off production earlier this month. Should cameras still begin rolling in March, it would line up with the previous reports to have it wrap later this year, setting it up for an early 2024 release. While audiences await further updates on the film, they can revisit Gans’ original Silent Hill streaming on Sling and its follow-up on HBO Max.
