How Tyler Hoechlin’s Action Style Grew From Teen Wolf To Superman & Lois

EXCLUSIVE: Teen Wolf: The Movie second unit director Chris Brewster reflects on Tyler Hoechlin’s journey to mastering the art of the action scene.

In the midst of portraying Superman in Superman & Lois, Tyler Hoechlin delighted audiences with a return to his roots in Teen Wolf: The Movie, and returned to the franchise with a new level of expertise under his belt. Hoechlin’s Derek Hale went out in a blaze of glory, ultimately sacrificing himself to save his son, and while the moment was sad, it was a strong end to a beloved character. The end of Derek Hale also marks the end of an era, as Hoechlin had been attached to the character since the Teen Wolf series started airing in 2011.

Of course, Hoechlin’s return to the world of Teen Wolf was informed by the roles he has taken since the series began, most notably his turns as Superman both in the Arrowverse and the series Superman & Lois. While his experiences as Superman may manifest in subtle ways on-screen in Teen Wolf: The Movie, those behind the camera certainly took notice, especially when it came time to film Derek Hale’s action sequences. When speaking about Hoechlin’s return in Teen Wolf: The Movie after honing his action skills on Superman & Lois, second unit director Chris Brewster had this to say:

To be completely honest, Hoechlin has been built like Superman since working on Teen Wolf. He’s incredibly fit now, but he’s always been incredibly fit. I think the only difference is that on Teen Wolf, he only had a few years of doing action on camera under his belt, and now, after many years of doing action not only on Teen Wolf but also as Superman, he’s definitely even more polished than he was.

I feel like with experience, you get a certain level of performance, you’re able to stack punches wherever the camera is, and you almost build up a sixth sense for where that camera is. So, as you’re moving throughout an action sequence, you know right where to put everything, you know exactly how to sell each reaction. He was always really, really good at action, and he’s even better now.

Where Tyler Hoechlin’s Career Might Go After Superman & Lois

Tyler Hoechlin as Superman in Superman & Lois

Clearly, Brewster has the utmost respect for Tyler Hoechlin’s ability to turn in an exciting and believable action sequence, so it would make sense that Hoechlin would find his way into more action roles following Superman & Lois. Of course, Hoechlin’s notable turn in the critically acclaimed 2020 time loop film Palm Springs also points to a promising future outside the realm of action. Hoechlin certainly seems to be the kind of actor who could excel in a dramatic thriller like Jack Ryan with as much ease as a slower-paced, more emotional series in the vein of This is Us.

Another factor in Hoechlin’s future is surely the takeover of DCU by James Gunn and Peter Safran. While Superman & Lois has been confirmed to continue, there’s no telling for how long the show will run given the slew of changes the studio continues to undergo. As it stands, Superman & Lois could seemingly begin its own TV universe à la the Arrowverse just as easily as it could come to an end in the not-too-distant future. For now, at least, Hoechlin’s Superman will be seen soon in the imminent Superman & Lois season 3.
