Mark Ruffalo Says Marvel Should Worry About James Gunn’s DC Universe

[ad_1]

Marvel Cinematic Universe Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo believes Marvel Studios needs to worry about the competition from James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

James Gunn’s new DC Universe should be a cause for concern for Marvel Studios, according to Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo. Gunn directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will conclude with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this May. However, at one moment it appeared the director would not be back for the final movie, as he was fired by Marvel parent company Disney over past controversial tweets. Gunn would eventually be rehired, but not before he signed on to direct The Suicide Squad for DC. That ultimately turned into the director becoming one of DC Studios new co-CEOs.

Ruffalo spoke at Emerald City Comic-Con (via The Direct) about what Gunn’s DC Universe reboot means to Marvel’s MCU going forward. The actor was asked about what advice he had for DC — as the studio currently reboots the old DCEU into the new DC Universe — to which Ruffalo said “Marvel should be sweating” about Gunn’s plans for DC’s future. That level of confidence from Ruffalo is a testament to the body of work Gunn has amassed, and that might help the new DC Universe rival the MCU soon. Check out the full quote below:

I would say, hire James Gunn, cause nobody does it better. And Marvel should be sweating because James Gunn is a really gifted filmmaker and I think he’s going to be amazing for that franchise.

James Gunn’s DCU Could Bring Bad News To The MCU Soon

James Gunn's New DCU

Marvel is currently going through the studio’s roughest patch, with the MCU’s Phase 4 having been the most uneven the cinematic universe has ever been, which counterpoints the excitement over Gunn’s DC Universe reveals for the new DCU Chapter One. The debut of the MCU’s Phase 5 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which introduced the MCU’s new Big Bad, Kang the Conqueror, has severely underperformed at the box office, and is currently projected to be the lowest-grossing Ant-Man movie. Meanwhile, the announcement of the first projects in Gunn’s DC Universe was met with overwhelming praise.

Marvel’s recent negative critic reviews and downward trend at the box office could not come at a worse time for the studio, as the new DC management begins a transparent process of fixing the old DCEU’s mistakes and winning audiences back, with Gunn being the perfect man for the job. Gunn’s DCU cosmic movies could fulfill his lost Marvel role. Gunn was once poised to be the architect of Marvel’s cosmic side, branching out from his work with the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, his firing canceled those plans, which he can now rework into a successful cosmic corner at DC.

Gunn has shown he understands the comics and what audiences want, be it at Marvel or DC, so the director is uniquely equipped with finally making the DC Universe a rival to the MCU. Gunn can make DC movies successful enough to take the box office crown from Marvel, with DC’s Superman and Batman reboots in the horizon, alongside the MCU’s current struggles. Gunn’s new DCU role proves Marvel vs DC — the debate that has been going on since the old DCEU — might finally become real, thanks to the exciting plans for the new DC Universe.
