Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman first met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the Deadpool actor playfully blames Jackman for the bad movie.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is widely considered to be one of the worst superhero movies of all time, and Ryan Reynolds jokingly blames star Hugh Jackman for the movie being a “trash fire.” The actors met as Wade Wilson and Wolverine during filming for the ill-received movie, which among its faults butchered Deadpool. Now, Deadpool 3 brings the duo back together as their respective characters for a Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure, but Reynolds is not letting Jackman forget where they came from.
During an interview with Variety, Reynolds playfully blamed Jackman for X-Men Origins: Wolverine turning out a disaster. It has been a long time since the 2009 movie was released, and Wolverine will debut in the MCU’s Deadpool 3, set for a 2024 release, alongside the titular hero for an adventure that promises to be way more accurate to the comic books than what transpired in the “absolute trash fire” called X-Men Origins: Wolverine. “Everyone’s expecting me to eviscerate Hugh Jackman but I will say he was one of the first movie stars I ever worked with, back in 2007, on an absolute trash fire called ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ — that one was on him.”
How Deadpool 3 Can Faithfully Bring Wade Wilson & Wolverine Together
X-Men Origins: Wolverine introduced audiences to the potential that Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine have when together. Although the movie was ill-received, the scenes the duo of mutants shared together, before Wade Wilson was transformed into the mess that was Weapon XI, were actually quite good. Wade Wilson and Wolverine showed signs of their back-and-forth from the comics, which has evolved into a real-life “feud” between Reynolds and Jackman, setting up Deadpool 3‘s tone. The playful relationship the actors have developed has proven popualar, which bodes well for Deadpool 3‘s box office.
While X-Men Origins: Wolverine made the mistake of taking away Reynolds’ biggest asset as Wade Wilson — his undeniable charm through snarky remarks — by sewing the character’s mouth shut, audiences can expect a fully realized Deadpool to stand next to Jackman’s Wolverine when the duo reunites. Reynolds has shown through the two movies in Fox’s X-Men universe that he understands what makes the character work in the comics and has perfectly translated that to the big screen. Deadpool 3 ditching Fox’s X-Men for the MCU provides a chance for the reunion between the mutants to be even more accurate to the comics than it could have been in the Fox universe.
Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, has reiterated that Deadpool 3 will maintain the franchise’s signature R-rating in the MCU, making it the first such film in the successful universe. Feige shows that Marvel has full faith in the Deadpool team, choosing to allow Reynolds and company to craft out a story that is inherently true to the character rather than adapting Wade Wilson to suit the MCU’s needs, like was done in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman’s Wolverine could get the iconic yellow costume from the comics in the movie, thanks to the MCU being well-known for faithfully suiting up their characters. This way, X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘s mistake can be corrected.
