The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s final trailer reveals one last look at the details of the upcoming feature. The film is the first major movie adaptation of the iconic Super Mario video game franchise since the live-action 1993 flop Super Mario Bros., which starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. This new version comes from Minions studio Illumination on April 5 and stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Today at a Nintendo Direct presentation celebrating Mario Day, Nintendo and Illumination unveiled the final official trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The trailer opens with a scene of Luigi being imprisoned along with several other recognizable characters from the Mario games, finished off with a dark but humorous punchline. In addition to featuring more setup about exactly how Bowser hopes to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer also shows a much more detailed look at Mario’s journey on Rainbow Road, including a desperate maneuver to escape some Bullet Bills.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Bringing Classic Game Elements to Life

The promotional campaign for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made it clear that the filmmakers want to adapt more than just the Super Mario games. While there is plenty of side-scrolling mayhem to be seen in the trailer as well, the Rainbow Road scene is straight from the Mario Kart subfranchise. The original Mario Kart racing game debuted in 1992, and it has now expanded to include no fewer than 10 titles, many of which include the infamous Rainbow Road level.

Many of the abilities and power-ups that can be used in Mario Kart can be seen in the trailer. This includes players’ ability to throw shells at their opponents to knock them off the course. However, they are also given a fresh in-universe twist, allowing players to see what it might be like if Mario could actually leap from his Kart and perform exciting off-course maneuvers.

While Mario Kart and the Rainbow Road course have been heavily featured in advertising for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, those settings could just be the tip of the iceberg. The movie is clearly packed with references for die-hard fans of the franchise. This means there is nearly unlimited potential for the film to reference any game in the universe, including titles like Mario Tennis and Dr. Mario, before all is said and done.
