Ian McShane has addressed John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum‘s twist ending, which saw his character, Winston, shoot Keanu Reeves’ John Wick off the rooftop of the Continental. After a parlay between Winston and the Adjudicator of the High Table, the pair come to an agreement that sees Winston return to power within New York’s Continental. After the Adjudicator asks what should be done about John, Winston proceeds to shoot him off the roof, where he nearly dies falling many stories to an alleyway below.
Ahead of John Wick: Chapter 4 McShane addressed Winston’s decision to shoot John by adding context to Winston’s thought process while speaking with Digital Spy. He explains that, despite always protecting John because of their friendship, his allegiances are fickle because of how necessary it is for him to appeal to the High Table. I think the one thing about Winston is, you’ve got, in the first three [movies]… he’s protecting John. He’s trying to do his best. Except at the end of [John Wick] 3 when he shoots John – I mean I would say that he knew he was wearing a bullet proof vest, so he shot him deliberately, but I mean, why question that? Is he acting in the best interest of the High Table or John? But this time, when Winston’s world is turned upside-down within 20 minutes of the movie by the actions that happen at the beginning – he very much is full-blown behind John. But by the end, is he or isn’t he? I don’t know. That’s a kind of good thing.
How Winston Can Ally With John In John Wick 4
Winston’s torn alliances between the High Table and John seem like they will continue as a point of contention for him in John Wick: Chapter 4. Trailers for the upcoming John Wick installment see Winston tell John about the Marquis de Gramont, who John can challenge for a position at the High Table in order to escape his current life on the run. It appears that, despite nearly killing John, Winston has made amends with him and still cares enough to show him how he can find a way out.
However, John Wick: Chapter 4 also happens after Winston shoots Wick off the Continental, meaning he will start the film allied with the High Table. It’s possible that Winston continues to be allied with them while he’s giving John instructions on how he can challenge the Marquis to single combat. In such a scenario, Winston could act as John’s man on the inside, putting his life on the line to ensure John is able to challenge the Marquis without interference from other members of the table.
Sadly, it’s also possible that Winston is using John’s yearning to escape life as an assassin against him, so he will be an easier target for the High Table. While Winston’s friendship with John has proven to be strong in the first three John Wick films, he may have to put those feelings aside to save himself from the Table’s wrath once more. McShane’s statement underscores just how muddled Winston’s allegiances are, and how important his decision at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum will be going forward.
