Army Of The Dead 2 Status Clarified By Zack Snyder

Writer and director Zack Snyder clarifies the status of Army of the Dead 2 after the project was first announced in 2021. Army of the Dead was released on Netflix in May of 2021, chronicling a doomed mission to recover an abundance of cash in a zombie-overrun version of Las Vegas. The movie quickly became one of the streamer’s most-watched originals, and while a spinoff prequel called Army of Thieves arrived later that same year, Planet of the Dead, the planned sequel, has yet to come to fruition.

Now, in a recent interview with The Nerd Queens, Snyder offers an update on Army of the Dead 2, confirming that the project is still very much in the works. The director confirms that the main reason for the delay is actually his work on Rebel Moon, his upcoming Netflix space opera that may very well kickstart its own franchise universe. Check out Snyder’s full comment below:

“As far as the Army Universe goes though: it’s still alive and well in my mind. I know exactly what I would do. It really depends on how we try to figure out how we go forward with Rebel Moon and [the] Rebel Moon universe. It’s not a small-time commitment, Rebel Moon stuff. A sci-fi thing at this scale does require a lot of attention to make it all make sense. It’s a very interconnected world.”

What To Expect From Army Of The Dead 2

While it sounds like it might be some time before the Army of the Dead sequel actually comes to fruition, the franchise still holds a great deal of promise. Most of the characters in the original movie are dead by the time the credits roll, but several fan theories make a sequel an enticing proposition. The biggest fan theory that Snyder himself has stoked is the idea that Dave Bautista’s Scott Ward and his crew are actually stuck in a time loop.

Army of the Dead also briefly shows what appears to be a zombie robot, hinting that the world of the film may not be all that it seems. With several of these mysteries left unsolved, it’s possible that Army of the Dead 2 won’t be the kind of direct sequel that was initially expected. In terms of what characters the sequel could follow, Scott’s daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell), is really the sole human survivor of the expedition, and it’s possible that she will return for the follow-up adventure.

That being said, it’s also been strongly hinted that at least one presumed-dead member of the heist squad could actually still be alive. Matthias Schweighöfer’s Dieter, who returned in the prequel, is never actually shown dying in Army of the Dead, and Snyder himself has also teased that there could be more to come with this character. While Army of the Dead 2 may not be releasing anytime soon, it’s clear that Snyder hasn’t abandoned plans to continue his zombie franchise just yet.
