Producer Erica Lee teases what fans can expect from the John Wick prequel series, The Continental. The Continental hotels have been a major part of the John Wick world since the debut of the first Keanu Reeves-led movie. The spin-off series, which will debut on Peacock later this year, will shed more light on the mysterious establishments and how Ian McShane’s Winston became such a powerful figure as the manager of the New York Continental.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for John Wick: Chapter 4, Lee shared some insight for what to expect from The Continental spin-off series. She discussed when the prequel series will be set and that it will explore how Winston became the hotel’s manager, while also explaining how the series offers them more time to explore other John Wick mysteries. The cool thing about The Continental is that it’s an alternate timeline. It’s the 70s, so it’s the birth of the Continental. What we love in the movies are that people get glimpses of the coins and the rooms in the Continental, and the inner workings of the hotel. There’s very little backstory on characters like Winston.
What is interesting and fun to explore is how Winston got to become the manager of the Continental. How are the gold coins made? What are the inner workings of the hotel? That was something that I was so fun for me to work on, and I think audiences will really love it. We have a little bit more time to tell the story in that timeframe.
What John Wick Movies Have Already Revealed About The Continental
The Continental is integral to the world of John Wick, with hotels around the world that are safe havens for the assassins working for the High Table. The Osaka and Casablanca Continentals have been touched upon in John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4. However, the New York Continental has been at the center of all four movies, with two of John Wick’s allies, Winston and Lance Reddick’s Charon, as the manager and concierge, respectively.
The Continental is subject to a number of rules, the most important being that business can’t be conducted on the premises. John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 show the ramifications of breaking this cardinal rule when John Wick kills Santino. Wick is subsequently deemed excommunicado, and open season is declared on him, with countless assassins trying to collect the bounty on his head, all while he tries to get out from under the High Table’s thumb.
The Continental will debut on Peacock in September with three 90-minute episodes. With Lee teasing that the John Wick prequel series will further explore Winston’s origins, it will be interesting to see if it tackles the early days of his relationship with Charon and why the now-late concierge held such an unwavering loyalty to his boss through the franchise.
