Extraction 2‘s latest advertising stunt has backfired for Netflix. The upcoming film features the return of Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary who was the lead character of the 2020 film Extraction and whose ultimate fate was left somewhat ambiguous. Today on Twitter, Netflix posted an image of their office’s marquee, which bears a Morse Code message that translates to “TYLER RAKE LIVES”
This post from Netflix was meant as a bit of promotion ahead of the Extraction 2 release date on June 16. However, it backfired for two reasons, the first being that the spacing of the first word led many online translators to say the first word was “ÑLER.” The second is that it allowed fans to falsely translate the message any way they liked, typically twisting it into demands for their favorite TV shows, including a Shadow & Bone season 3 renewal and a Heartstopper season 2 release date. Do Netflix’s Huge Movies Have the Same Cultural Impact as Their Series?
The original Extraction was a huge hit for Netflix. In fact, it’s their seventh most-watched English language film, with audiences clocking in over 230 million viewing hours. However, the general lack of excitement around this sequel tease (including several people asking who Tyler Rake is) would seem to indicate that it doesn’t hold much cultural cachet, at least among fans online.
It makes sense for fans to be demanding confirmation of a new season and spinoff of Shadow and Bone, which just premiered its new season earlier this month. However, the flood of Tweets specifically related to Heartstopper season 2 would seem to show that Netflix’s TV offerings linger longer in the cultural memory. Season 1 of the LGBTQ+ romantic drama premiered in April 2022, almost a year ago.
It’s possible that the nature of television’s seasonal production schedule is responsible for this discrepancy. Audiences are trained to expect new seasons of their favorite series once a year, whereas sequels to movies can often take several years to come to fruition. Extraction 2 could very well perform even better than the original, but the phenomenon is certainly intriguing.
