Warning! Spoilers ahead for Murder Mystery 2.
Murder Mystery 2 director Jeremy Garelick reveals that the film’s ending was originally very different from the cliffhanger that plays out on-screen. Serving as a follow-up to 2019’s Murder Mystery, Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston return as couple Nick and Audrey Spitz, this time faced with a new case to solve. After solving the mystery of the Maharajah’s (Adeel Akhtar) kidnapping, the billionaire gifts them $10 million in a briefcase. The film ends, however, with the Maharajah’s eccentric pilot stealing the cash and leaving the Spitzs for dead in an unmanned helicopter.
In a recent interview Collider, Garelick reveals that Murder Mystery 2‘s cliffhanger ending was initially scripted quite differently. In fact, the entire sequence as it ends up in the final film came about as a result of problems caused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out Garelick’s full comment below:
“[The cliffhanger ending] was in a version of the script, but it was also– Actually, now that I think of it, we were actually planning on shooting a different scene for the ending, but because of COVID, the thing that we needed for that scene didn’t get there in time.
“So we had to come up with a different idea. So I remember pitching this to Adam, this idea, and then we just kind of did a pass at the scene and it was fun. It was a fun way to end, and it definitely makes the audience wonder what’s happening next, you know?”
Murder Mystery 2’s Ending Sets Up Another Sequel
Murder Mystery became a surprise hit for Netflix when it was released in 2019, celebrating what was at the time the biggest opening weekend ever for one of the streamer’s original movies. The sequel performed almost as well, with Murder Mystery 2‘s opening weekend viewership numbers nabbing the number 2 spot for comedy movie openings. Despite mostly negative reviews from critics, the sequel’s viewership performance means a third movie might get the green light.
If Murder Mystery 3 does happen, the latest sequel’s ending provides a perfect place to pick up the action. While recovering a lost briefcase full of cash wouldn’t quite live up to the “murder” part of the Murder Mystery title, it could serve as a jumping-off point for a bigger story. Little is known about the Spitzs’ pilot, played by Carlos Ponce, but his actions at the end of the film would suggest that he’s an experienced criminal instead of someone who, on a whim, decided to capitalize on an opportunity to steal $10 million.
It seems likely that, after somehow landing their out-of-control helicopter, Nick and Audrey uncover more about the pilot. It’s possible, for example, that the pilot is just a cog in a much larger machine, perhaps serving as part of a criminal enterprise or doing the bidding of a powerful new villain. It remains to be seen if a follow-up to Murder Mystery 2 will happen, but the film’s ending certainly leaves the door open for further adventures.
