Simon Pegg reveals what has become of his iconic Shaun of the Dead costume in a new post celebrating the film’s 19th anniversary. Directed by Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead follows Pegg’s titular unambitious character as he and his best friend Ed, played by Nick Frost, attempt to survive the zombie apocalypse. The 2004 dark comedy was a surprise success at the box office, kickstarting a pattern of collaborations between Pegg, Frost, and Wright that has since been dubbed the Cornetto Trilogy.
Celebrating 19 years since Shaun of the Dead was released, Pegg took to Instagram to share a photo of his framed costume from the film.
While the reflection from the glass in the frame would suggest that the piece is hanging somewhere in Pegg’s home or office, the actor tagged the location as “The Winchester Pub,” a reference to the location of the climactic zombie battle in the film. Pegg includes a witty caption with the photo, writing “In case of zombie apocalypse, break glass. Happy 19th Birthday Shaun of the Dead.”
Why Shaun Of The Dead Remains A Zombie Movie Classic
There have been a number of zombie movies over the years, from early, groundbreaking movies like White Zombie and Night of the Living Dead to more recent movies like World War Z and Army of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead stands alone, however, reinvigorating the genre and mixing in a healthy dose of dark British humor. Much of the reason why Shaun of the Dead remains a favorite in the zombie genre is down to Wright’s direction, which features snappy camera movement and clever visual gags.
The script, which was written by Wright and Pegg, also presents the zombie apocalypse in a way that had never been seen before. Pegg and Frost bring their unique chemistry and comedic talents to the film, making their two slacker characters worth rooting for despite the fact that they’re really the last two people one would expect to survive such an event. Shaun of the Dead also remains firmly focused on character, telling a human story about Shaun’s attempts to get his life back together and make amends with his ex-girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield).
Shaun of the Dead is also helped, of course, by the fact that the collaborations between Pegg, Frost, and Wright would continue in subsequent years. Both Hot Fuzz and The World’s End double down on the trio’s darkly comedic sensibilities and the three films make the perfect triple feature. It remains to be seen if Pegg, Frost, and Wright will reunite for a fourth film in the future (Shaun of the Dead 2 is off the table), but Shaun of the Dead remains just as entertaining and hilarious now as it was 19 years ago.
