Star Wars Celebration Skips 2024, Returns To Japan In 2025 After 17 Years

Following a hiatus next year, Star Wars Celebration will be returning for 2025 in Japan. The wild event in London has just come to a close, seeing a wide array of announcements ranging from new films, live-action TV castings, books, and merchandise. Though it’s sad to see Celebration come and pass, the next one will take significant time to plan for.

Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Chiba, Japan for a three-day event.

This marks the second time the convention has been hosted in Japan, 20 years after Star Wars Celebration III in 2005. Ticket information will be revealed at a later date.

Celebration Crashes Japan For Major Anniversaries

Much like the Japan event itself, 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Merchandise and marketing with Darth Vader’s helmet surrounded by flames covered the world in 2005, and Celebration can tap into that nostalgia in a few years. The year also sees the 10th anniversary of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, appropriately offering the chance to celebrate the end of George Lucas’ saga and the beginning of the Disney era on the big screen.

With the majority of this year’s announcements likely to have premiered by the time Celebration Japan comes around, what will be discussed is anyone’s guess. The Mandalorian and The Acolyte seem likely, as Andor and Star Wars: The Bad Batch will have come to a close and the remaining series are limited. Depending on the speed of development, a movie could be in line for a 2025 release, which would warrant a panel and teaser trailer. The New Jedi Order movie starring Daisy Ridley as Rey would be fitting, given the character’s introduction a decade prior.

Japan being the site of the next event was an initial surprise, as Celebration has never been in back-to-back international locations before. But with Revenge of the Sith‘s anniversary coinciding with that of the first Celebration hosted in Chiba, the sentimentality works well with the need to expand the event back into the Asian continent. For US-based fans, it will be a long wait for the next event – but pencil in 2027 for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. Talking about the next Celebration so soon after this year’s just finished seems crazy, but always in motion is the future.
