The trailer for Peacock’s new documentary Cocaine Bear: The True Story promises to reveal the truth behind the popular film, Cocaine Bear. After a large black bear ingests a copious amount of cocaine dropped from an airplane by a drug courier, the animal goes on a violent rampage, tearing through the film’s ensemble cast. Directed by Pitch Perfect 2‘s Elizabeth Banks, the comedy horror movie stars Ray Liotta, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Margo Martindale, Christian Convery, and Keri Russell.

Through the use of interviews and archival footage, Cocaine Bear: The True Story aims to set the record straight regarding the subject of Banks’ violent monster movie. The documentary will focus on the notorious figures, criminal enterprises, and murder that led to the infamous Cocaine Bear legend.
How Cocaine Bear Diverges From the Real Story (And Succeeds)
Although Cocaine Bear touts its real-life inspiration, the film’s story bears little resemblance to what really happened. In 1985, drug smugglers took to the skies in a small airplane and dropped 40 containers of cocaine in the Tennessee wilderness. After his parachute failed to deploy, Andrew C. Thornton II died on impact after jumping from the self-piloted plane. Several months later, a 175-pound black bear was found dead after it had eaten nearly 75 pounds of cocaine.
However, that’s where much of the real story’s similarities with the Cocaine Bear movie end. After eating the narcotic, the black bear quickly died of an overdose. Tourists, delinquents, and park rangers were not brutally slaughtered in a drug-fueled murderous rage. In fact, no one was killed by the bear. The legendary Cocaine Bear was subsequently taxidermized and placed on display at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Tennessee before it somehow made its way to a mall in Lexington, Kentucky.
Pit against Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Cocaine Bear managed to score a decent haul at the box office before hitting video-on-demand only two weeks later. Using the real-life events as loose inspiration for Cocaine Bear proved successful for the genre film as it pulled in over $84 million worldwide. With Cocaine Bear: The True Story set to release on Peacock on April 14, the same day as Cocaine Bear‘s streaming premiere, audiences can compare the real life event to the popular film for themselves.
