The Barbie vs. Oppenheimer battle goes nuclear in a new crossover poster. As two of 2023’s most anticipated movies, Oppenheimer and Barbie will go head-to-head this summer when they release in theaters on the same day, July 21. The two tent poles hail from acclaimed Oscar-nominated directors, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, and feature star-studded ensemble casts. However, the two movies are very different stylistically, as one is a satirical comedy based on the colorful Mattel fashion dolls, and the other is a partially black-and-white biopic chronicling Oppenheimer’s role in creating the atomic bomb.

Now, as the Barbie vs. Oppenheimer box office debate rages on, the battle is going nuclear in a brand-new crossover poster, which can be seen below:

Created and shared by Bosslogic on Instagram, the fan-made crossover poster imagines Margot Robbie’s Barbie spectating an appropriately pink atomic blast on the far horizon of Barbieland. In the bottom right corner, a mashed-up title reads “Barbie: The Destroyer of Worlds” in reference to Oppenheimer’s infamous quotation of the Bhagavad Gita as he witnessed the first detonation of a nuclear weapon – “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Will Barbie Win The Box Office Battle Against Oppenheimer?

Ever since it was clear the two films would be opening on the exact same day, a Barbie vs. Oppenheimer debate has raged on over which anticipated movie will win the box office battle. No clear frontrunner has emerged, as a compelling case could be made for why either film will emerge victorious. Fresh off its buzzy batch of characters posters and viral trailer, it appears Barbie has the slight edge for the time being. The Barbie movie is also based on a beloved brand and IP which, in today’s box office landscape, is often integral to success.

Nolan is also an established brand as a blockbuster filmmaker with three films outside The Dark Knight trilogy – Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk – that have been big office successes without the help of an established IP. Oppenheimer is also the kind of epic film with stunning visuals that audiences will want to see once, and maybe even twice in theaters, while they might be content waiting for Barbie to arrive on home video. While it briefly looked like Oppenheimer might be delayed to the end of the year, a report has debunked those rumors, meaning its box office battle with Barbie is still on for this summer.
