How Scream VI Editor’s Work With Jenna Ortega On Wednesday Influenced Tara

[ad_1]

Scream VI editor Jay Prychidny explains how his work on Wednesday influenced the way he edited Jenna Ortega’s performance as Tara. Prychidny previously edited Wednesday and was used to Ortega’s more contained and nuanced emotional performance as the younger Addams. This knowledge and experience was something that Prychidny used when working on Scream VI, specifically with how he approached the tone of Ortega’s performance as Tara.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about Scream VI, Prychidny discussed how his experience on Wednesday helped him with Scream VI. He shared his surprise at seeing Ortega in Scream 2022 after working on Wednesday and explained how his experience on Wednesday led him to make Tara’s tone different in Scream VI by adding more internal moments. Wednesday and Tare are such different characters. I actually saw Scream V in theaters before I knew I was going to be working on this film. It shocked me because I’d been so used to Jenna being this very contained, very quiet, very small character, and expressing so much with so little. To go in to see Scream V and see her screaming and crying and wailing and in distress? It was like, “Whoa.” It totally surprised me and really took me off guard.

That was something I did think about, in terms of Jenna’s performance. Not to make it Wednesday or anything like that, but just to get her to be a bit more internal as well. I like that aspect, and she’s so good at it. And so, I did tone Tara a little bit differently than in Scream V for that reason.

How Scream VI & Wednesday Show Jenna Ortega’s Range

Ortega was an integral part of Scream 2022 as Tara, but her story was not the main focus. Sam was the central focus of Scream 2022, with her mission to rescue Tara providing a pivotal motivation. Tara spent most of the film being attacked or injured in the hospital. Scream VI was an opportunity to more fully flesh out Tara beyond the young woman being terrorized by Ghostface to lure her sister home. Tara’s emotional journey is a central arc in Scream VI, along with that of her sister, as they battle their past traumas and the new Ghostface killers together.

Prychidny’s experience on Wednesday gave him unique insight into Ortega’s abilities as a performer. He understands how she is able to express emotions in a more nuanced way, like Wednesday Addams, versus Tara’s more bombastic emotional release. With this knowledge, Prychidny was able to bring out the more internalized aspects of Ortega’s emotional moments, including when she is pushing down her trauma or developing the romance between Tara and Chad.

Ortega has become a fixture in horror with the Scream franchise and Wednesday. The characters she plays are vastly different, but they are both survivors at their core. Ortega is able to show her range as a performer with Scream and Wednesday, and having an editor who has seen both sides of the spectrum with her performances helps to bring out the strongest aspects. Prychidny could tap into what he knows about Ortega as a performer from Wednesday with Scream VI in a way other editors wouldn’t be able to.
