Scream 6 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett tease that the upcoming slasher sequel will feature a nod to Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday role. Following Ghostface’s triumphant return to screens last year, Scream 6 will see a whole host of new victims attempt to uncover the identity of yet another copycat killer. Melissa Barrera will return as Sam Carpenter while Ortega will reprise her role as her sister Tara. Scream 6 will take the siblings and their friends to an all-new location as they attempt to evade yet another round of gruesome Ghostface murders.

During the brief window between Scream (2022) and Scream 6, Ortega has seen her star rise after leading Netflix’s new Addams Family-inspired series, Wednesday. Now, Scream 6 directors, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have teased that Ortega’s breakout role actually influenced this upcoming horror. Speaking to Den of Geek, the pair were asked whether Scream 6‘s subway scene features a Wednesday easter egg, to which they teased that the subway scene doesn’t, however, “there is Addams Family…” referenced within the film. Check out the directors’ quote below:

Not in the subway, but there is Addams Family… So much of the tone and the fun of what this movie is, we think, is that all this crazy sh*t’s happening, but at any moment somebody wearing a ridiculous costume could walk through the shot. That for us is Scream in a nutshell. That the real world can enter and exit this really terrifying experience at any moment. And being in New York on Halloween, there were just so many opportunities for that.

How Jenna Ortega Became One Of Scream 6’s Biggest Names

Jenna Ortega in the Scream 6 trailer

Prior to her introduction into the Scream franchise in last year’s Scream (2022), Ortega had a considerable number of projects under her belt, including Jane The Virgin and a supporting role in Netflix’s You. After impressing theater-goers with her performance in Scream (2022) as well as Ti West’s X, many foresaw the approaching trajectory of Ortega’s career as the young star quickly became one of 2022’s biggest breakout stars following her role in Wednesday. With the show breaking numerous Netflix records, Ortega became an immediate sensation for her portrayal of the iconic character, as well as a particular dance routine that went viral across social media.

Many were excited to hear that Scream 6 will offer a much more expanded role for Ortega’s Tara, as the actress continues to establish herself as an up-and-coming scream queen. Scream 6 will see Ortega joined by Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding as Ghostface appears to have followed them to the East Coast. With Tara and Sam now well-versed in taking down the Ghostface killer, there is ample opportunity for Ortega to lead the way in this upcoming sequel, in which she now features as one of its biggest stars.

With Ortega likely still reeling from the success of Wednesday, the anticipation around Scream 6 is at an all-time high as many eagerly await to get their hands on this next installment. Although Scream 6 was filmed before Wednesday hit screens, the director’s addition of a Wednesday easter egg is a fun little nod that is sure to delight those who manage to catch it. Audiences will have to keep an eye out for any Addams Family references when Scream 6 lands in theaters next month.
