M3GAN Unrated Cut Release Date Confirmed (& It’s Very Soon)

A previously hinted-at unrated version of the horror hit M3GAN is getting released on digital later in February alongside the PG-13 theatrical cut.

M3GAN the unrated version gets a release date, and it won’t be a long wait. The killer robot doll M3GAN became both a box office phenomenon and an internet sensation when she was featured in 2023’s satirical horror hit. But though the film proved to be such a surprise smash, it could be argued that the movie’s PG-13 rating held it back from being the sort of full-on gorefest that horror fans truly crave.

Now those who loved M3GAN in the PG-13 version, but craved a little more blood alongside the creepiness and satire, will get to see what an unrated cut of the movie would be like. And they won’t have to wait very long to see it. As was just announced (via Bloody Disgusting), M3GAN is set to hit digital on February 24, 2023, and the release will include the unrated version alongside the theatrical. The film then hits Blu-ray on March 21. Other bonus features of the release are listed below:

  • A New Vision of Horror – Filmmakers and cast break down how the world of M3GAN was created, including the initial idea, through production under the leadership of director Gerard Johnstone
  • Bringing Life to M3GAN – See how animatronics, puppets, and actor Amie Donald helped make M3GAN as real as possible
  • Getting Hacked – A behind-the-scenes look at how cast and crew accomplished some of the film’s complex stunts and gory deaths

Why M3GAN Needed An Unrated Version

It’s hard to argue that the PG-13 version of M3GAN doesn’t work, given the film’s $168 million worldwide gross. But the lack of gore was arguably a drawback to the film, which feels a little tame at times when it seems like it should be going for broke. And indeed, the film’s own writer Akela Cooper (who also penned the bonkers horror film Malignant) recently teased that M3GAN was actually far bloodier in its original conception, telling the LA Times:

Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie. It wasn’t a Gabriel [in Malignant]-scale massacre, but she did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters whom [producer] James [Wan] was like, ‘I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.’ I was merciless, but again, that is me. My humor is extremely dark.”

Now that M3GAN has achieved box office success by pulling in younger audiences with its PG-13 cut, it’s only fair that hardcore horror fans get to witness the much bloodier unrated version teased by Cooper. Already considered a memorable horror film, M3GAN could by the addition of some well-timed gore cross over into classic territory. And fans will get to find out what a bloodier M3GAN is like much sooner than they may have expected (while they wait for the already-announced M3GAN 2).
