Joker: Folie à Deux will include a major change to Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, as set photos confirm a recent rumor from the movie. The sequel to the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time, Joker 2 introduces Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn as a co-protagonist alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn in the first movie, and the sequel appears to be giving its actors interesting material, with Arkham Asylum on fire in recent set photos, and a major change on the way for Harley Quinn.

On Twitter, GAGAIMAGES shared new Joker: Folie à Deux set photos, with one particular shot picturing a newspaper from the movie that features Gaga’s “Harleen Frances Quinzel” in her mugshot for Arkham.

The newspaper both confirms that Gaga will indeed be playing Harley Quinn, and not a character inspired by the DC anti-heroine, while also signaling a major change to the villain. A Joker: Folie à Deux rumor claimed that Harley Quinn would not meet the Joker as his doctor, like in her original first appearance, but rather both characters would be patients at Arkham, which the newspaper proves.

Why Joker 2’s Possible Harley Quinn Change Would Be Great?

The doctor-patient relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker is iconic, but has already been played out in different formats. A brief live-action take on the twisted romance was adapted in 2016’s Suicide Squad, with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn front and center. This remained true to Harley Quinn’s original origin story, which was first depicted in the Batman: The Animated Series episode “Mad Love.”

Joker: Folie à Deux making a huge change to how the Joker and Harley Quinn meet and develop their deranged romance could be great for the movie, but perhaps even greater for Gaga’s performance as the anti-heroine. Undoubtedly, when Joker: Folie à Deux premieres, Gaga’s performance as Harley Quinn will be measured against Robbie’s, just like Phoenix had to carve out a new space for himself as the Joker after Heath Ledger’s once in a lifetime performance as the villain in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Phoenix succeeded in doing so due to Todd Phillips’ Joker being more removed from its comic book context, showing a new angle at the character. By having Gaga’s Harley Quinn be a patient at Arkham alongside the Joker, instead of a doctor, Joker: Folie à Deux helps Gaga distance her performance as Harley from Robbie’s acclaimed role. With the set photos and videos of Arkham Asylum on fire in Joker: Folie à Deux, the movie might be looking at a prison break set in motion by the Joker and Harley Quinn, as the two patients likely want to get out of the institution.
