James Gunn speaks on the possibility of a Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe crossover now that he is at DC Studios. Gunn is the new creative mind for DC, becoming one of the comic book giant’s top two executives as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. The new DC Universe has started making waves with a novel vision for rebooting the film franchise. That vision aims to bring DC closer to its comic book roots, much like the MCU, and it is possible that the two comic book titans are bound for a crossover in the future.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Gunn revealed that there is a real possibility that DC and Marvel have a crossover now that he is in charge of DC Studios. While the audacious crossover seems possible now, Gunn is quick to point out that any projects between the two companies are still “many years away,” as Gunn’s DC Universe needs to first take shape on its own. Nonetheless, Gunn concluded on a positive note, confirming that discussions about a potential Marvel and DC crossover have happened in some form. Check out the full quote below:
“I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows? That’s many years away, though, I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”
How A Marvel & DC Crossover Could Happen
Gunn confirming that discussions about a possible Marvel and DC crossover, however small, have taken place is significant. The director-turned-executive is in a unique position to help bring the two biggest companies in comics together on the big screen. Gunn has a longtime friendship with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, having directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and once being thought to be the one who would shepherd the entire cosmic division of the MCU before Gunn moved over to DC.
Based on Gunn’s comments and his new DC position, it seems like a Marvel and DC crossover is just a matter of time. But first, as Gunn mentioned, DC needs to focus on itself. The old DCEU and its many controversies need to stay in the past, and Gunn is actively addressing complaints about DC’s past management. The new DC Universe will have a bigger focus on the company’s iconic heroes, like the forgotten Green Lantern, bringing them closer to their comic book versions while also maintaining the level of originality that Gunn’s known for.
After the new DC Universe gets established, with 2025’s Superman: Legacy reboot movie being written and directed by Gunn and properly starting the new universe, the door will be open for planning on how to have Marvel and DC crossover. Obviously, whatever way the companies decide to do it, the multiverse will be there. As the MCU is deep underway in its Multiverse Saga, DC will soon start playing with the multiverse with this June’s The Flash. The already announced new DC Universe versions of Batman and Superman meeting MCU characters like Spider-Man or Daredevil would be an unprecedented and historic live-action crossover.
