Everything We Know About the Wicked Film

Tony winner Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked adaptation opposite pop sensation Ariana Grande as Glinda. The film will detail both witches’ backstories, revealing how the two became close friends before they were famous enemies. With the original stage production operating with a packed two-act structure, the film has also been split into two movies. Wicked: Part One is scheduled for release on November 27, 2024, with Wicked: Part Two slated for the following year.

Director Jon M. Chu will direct both Wicked movies following his work on In the Heights, another musical, and Crazy Rich Asians. Wicked: Part One tapped original writers Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz to ensure the film honors what made the Broadway production a Tony Award-nominated musical. Splitting it into two films will likely allow the writers and director the chance to give Wicked: Part One the proper care it needs for a faithful translation to the big screen.

The highly-anticipated musical features a star-studded cast, including Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Ethan Slater as Boq, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Everything Everywhere All at Once star Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. With Wicked: Part One in the middle of production, perhaps it won’t be much longer before the first look at Erivo and Grande in costume emerges.
