Avatar: The Way of Water racks up the highest-grossing Wednesday of 2022 on the final week of the year, adding to its impressive box office haul.
Avatar: The Way of Water‘s landmark box office run has claimed one more record before the end of the year. The film, which is a belated sequel to James Cameron’s smash hit Avatar from 2009, was released in theaters on December 16 and raced to a cumulative worldwide gross of over $1 billion in just 14 days. Cameron, who returned to helm the project which also features many original cast members including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver, has admitted that the break-even point for the big-budget film is somewhere in the range of $2 billion. However, at this point, that dizzying goal still seems entirely achievable.
Per Deadline, Avatar: The Way of Water‘s box office run has led to another 2022 record. Right under the wire on the last Wednesday before New Year’s Eve, the film has achieved the highest-grossing Wednesday of 2022 with $20.4 million. This is an impressive achievement by any means, but even more astonishing because the first week of the film’s release only saw it earn the second-best Wednesday of the year (behind Top Gun: Maverick‘s $14.8 million on June 1), showing that the film has the unusual capacity to grow week over week and by a quite substantial margin.
Could Avatar 2 Become One of the Highest-Grossing Movies of 2022 AND 2023?
Although Avatar: The Way of Water will close out the year as the No. 1 film in international markets, it won’t be the No. 1 film of 2022 worldwide. That title will still belong to the legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick, a film whose landmark success resulted in an entirely unusual situation where its explosive domestic box office more or less matched its take in international markets. Though it won’t claim that throne, Avatar: The Way of Water‘s release at the very end of the year could mean that it will chart in the Top 3 of both 2022 and 2023.
December hits charting in multiple years isn’t an entirely uncommon occurrence. Last year saw the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is set to chart at No. 9 this year after taking the No. 1 slot last year. However, Avatar: The Way of Water could trounce Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s record if it fulfills Cameron’s goal of exceeding $2 billion. Hitting that goal would mean it would make an additional $1 billion or more in the early months of 2023, an impressive victory, especially in the COVID-19 era.
Avatar: The Way of Water‘s competition in the coming year is fierce, but given the unpredictable nature of recent ticket sales, it’s still possible for it to top the charts. It will have to face off against Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is the sequel to a film that earned a staggering $1.15 billion worldwide. The upcoming entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 as well as the Transformers and Fast and Furious franchises will also present some hurdles, but with this latest box office record proving the Avatar sequel’s ability to grow, it wouldn’t do well to bet against it.
