Potential Psych 4 Is Closer To Happening Than One Might Think

Psych star and writer James Roday Rodriguez provides more updates about Psych 4, saying it is closer to happening while sorting out scheduling.

A potential Psych 4 movie is closer to happening than previously thought. Based on the popular comedy-drama series, the Psych film franchise has provided an avenue for the show to live on after its run. Psych: The Movie, centering around the mystery adventures of main duo Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill), was released via the show’s original USA Network in 2017. Following the first film, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home and Psych 3: This Is Gus premiered on Peacock in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

According to TVLine, Psych 4 has been in the works and may happen in the near future. When asked for a status report, Rodriguez reveals that everyone involved in the film franchise is eager to get another Psych sequel going while figuring out scheduling. Finally, he confirms that the film is all the more likely to start rolling soon because there is already a script. Check Rodriguez’s full quote on Psych 4 below:

“The appetite is there on both sides, which is good, so I think it’s just a matter of, you know, semantics and scheduling. There’s nobody that doesn’t want it to happen. And there is a script, which is also an important element. So, I think it’s just a matter of when, not if. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later, just because you never want people to forget how much they love you. But a little bit of time is always good, too!”

How A Psych 4 Can Move The Franchise Forward

Following the events of the TV series, Psych: The Movie sees Shawn and Gus settled into San Francisco after three years after their relocation; Shawn plans to propose to his girlfriend and former coworker Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) and teams up with Gus to figure out who shot her SFPD partner. Psych 2: Lassie Comes Home was greenlit shortly after the first film was a rating hit. In the film, Chief Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) enlists Shawn and Gus’ help after being ambushed and suffering from a stroke. Critics praised Psych 2 for taking the franchise in new directions while remaining true to its heart. In the most recent Psych 3: This is Gus, Gus prepares for his wedding to Selene (Jazmyn Simon) and the birth of their child — and must track down his fianceė’s estranged husband alongside Shawn.

Psych 4 will take place presumably after Gus and Selene’s son is born and see him fully transition into his role as a husband and father. The story’s contents remain up in the air, but one possibility is referred to by TVLine; Hill previously shared that he liked a fan suggestion that Psych 4 be titled A Million Little Shawns, as an easter egg to Rodriguez’s A Million Little Things. Rodriguez’s role will be crucial in determining Psych 4’s status, not just as half of the starring lead duo but also as the film’s co-writer and executive producer. Psych 4 has the potential to maintain and reignite interest in the franchise — which, if in keeping with creator Steve Frank’s intentions, would consist of six movies overall.

Psych is the rare show that became even more popular after its run, with it being deemed a cult classic. Its ability to further last and endure through its movies is also a phenomenon in itself. If Psych 4 is to receive the official go-ahead, Rodriguez, Hill, Lawson, Simon, Omundson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen are expected to reprise their roles. While awaiting confirmation, there are likely two things to happen: Psych 4 will be accompanied by a title at least as good as A Million Little Shawns, and Psych 4 will be followed by more Psych.
