Now that Sam Wilson has assumed the role of Captain America, Anthony Mackie opens up on the possibility of his character leading the Avengers.
As the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie comments on if Sam Wilson will lead the Avengers moving forward. Following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam has finally assumed his rightful place as the next Captain America, just as Steve Rogers intended. Beyond that, however, there’s interest in knowing what lies ahead for him, including what role he will play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Mackie was asked if Sam Wilson’s Captain America will end up leading the Avengers just like Steve did in the Infinity Saga. The actor hasn’t given any indication about what to expect regarding this matter, but it sounds like he isn’t that enthusiastic about the idea. Read Mackie’s full quote below:
Sam is the only character without superpowers. He’s just a regular dude hanging out with a bunch of weirdos. Being from New Orleans, I’ve been in a few fights. And heart and charisma never helped me in a fight. That usually just got me beat up. So that might cause an issue when you go fight somebody like Thanos.
Could Sam Wilson’s Captain America Lead The Avengers?
In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam finally assumed his position as the new Star-Spangled Avenger. His finale speech was powerful enough to convince much of the population that he is worthy of continuing the legacy of Captain America. However, that may not be the end of his woes as he encounters new challenges in Captain America: New World Order directed by Julius Onah. In the film, he is expected to butt heads with Harrison Ford’s President Thunderbolt Ross.
For what it’s worth, the MCU’s official Avengers roster in the Multiverse Saga is still unclear. Because Marvel Studios are reserving Avengers films towards the end of their sagas, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t be re-assembling again until 2025 in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. So, it’s possible that Mackie just doesn’t know yet what the next Avengers team will look like and how Sam fits in it, hence his evasive answer.
As for Mackie’s seemingly pessimistic take on Sam leading the Avengers, Steve was also less powerful than his teammates, and yet he was an effective leader. Granted that he co-led the initiative with Iron Man, but it wasn’t Steve’s enhanced physical capabilities that made him in the role, but his morals. As his chosen successor of the shield, it’s clear that Steve is convinced that Sam can continue that as the new Captain America leading the Avengers.
