Avatar: The Way of Water screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver respond to theories about Kiri’s father. In 2009’s Avatar, Sigourney Weaver played the role of Dr. Grace Augustine, an exobiologist and head of the Avatar Program who dies during the conflict with the RDA. The iconic Aliens actress returns in the sequel as Kiri, Jake and Neytiri’s adopted teenage daughter who was miraculously born of Grace’s inert avatar. However, the identity of Kiri’s biological father, or whether she even has one, is unknown and has been the source of much speculation since the release of the film.
During a recent interview with Variety, Jaffa and Silver addressed some fan theories about Kiri’s father. The Avatar: The Way of Water writers responded directly to the theory of Kiri being a Pandoran messiah, ultimately deciding “it’s a mystery” that they “can’t really talk about.” Still, the screenwriters did suggest that any theories related to Kiri’s connection to Pandora are headed in the right direction. Jaffa: I don’t think we ever spoke about her specifically as a Na’vi Jesus. We set up these questions. We want people talking and thinking about these things.
Silver: But it’s a mystery. We can’t really talk about it. There definitely is that feeling that Kiri is undeniably, deeply connected to Eywa in the way that Grace was.
Who Is Kiri’s Father In Avatar 2?
Kiri’s father is perhaps the biggest mystery presented by Avatar: The Way of Water, leaving audiences to formulate their own theories about who he may be. In the sequel, Kiri’s brothers have their own theory about who her father is, joking it is Dr. Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore’s character from the first Avatar) after seeing him and Grace together in video logs. However, Kiri’s brothers seemed to be merely teasing their adopted sister.
What’s much more likely is that Kiri does not have a traditional biological father. While never revealed outright, Kiri’s deep connection to Pandora and her ability to control aquatic life strongly suggests she was immaculately conceived by Eywa, the Na’vi deity. This would, in turn, position Kiri as some kind of Pandoran messiah. Silver even went as far as to suggest that theories regarding Kiri’s connection to Eywa are on the right track.
Kiri’s Avatar Sequel Future Explained
If Kiri is a messianic-like figure, this could have a monumental impact on future Avatar films, as she could be the key to finally ending the conflict between Pandora and the RDA. This could be one of the surprising twists in store for Avatar 3, which could take the sequels into some unexpected territory if the Na’vi go to Earth. The Avatar: The Way of Water writers saying that Kiri’s origin is a mystery that they can’t talk about suggests it will be answered in subsequent sequels, likely Avatar 3 which is rumored to be subtitled The Seed Bearer and is already scheduled for a release on December 20, 2024.
