The official Back to the Future Twitter page has debunked rumors of an animated TV reboot of the film trilogy coming to Netflix with fitting GIFs.
A post to the official Back to the Future Twitter page debunks rumors of an animated series reboot for the time-travel franchise. Back to the Future first premiered in 1985 and quickly became the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide. It received critical acclaim for its originality and was nominated for four Academy Awards. Back to the Future‘s massive success allowed for the release of back-to-back sequel films debuting in 1989 and 1990, respectively. In 1991, an animated television adaptation of the series was released, running for two seasons before it was canceled due to low ratings. Though there have been no new major additions to the franchise, there have been rumors of a Back to the Future reboot for several years now.
In a post to Back to the Future‘s official Twitter, the franchise debunks rumors of an animated television revival. The account replied to a tweet from Giant Freakin Robot, which proclaimed that Back to the Future would become an animated series on Netflix. This caused the franchise to post a GIF of Christopher Lloyd saying, “It ain’t happening.” When a fan responded to this post asking if there was potential for such a thing, Back to the Future responded with a GIF of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) proclaiming, “The answer is no.” Check out the Tweets below:
Why So Many Fans Want a Back to the Future Reboot
Though the second and third film installments in the Back to the Future trilogy were nowhere near as successful as the original movie, fans of the franchise have been divided over whether to leave the iconic trilogy be, or to continue its legacy. In an interview this year, Michael J. Fox said that if Back to the Future should ever score a reboot, then he’d like to see his character Marty be portrayed by a woman. He also said that, while there are no plans for a reboot as of yet, he feels as though the franchise “will come around again.” In an age of frequent reboots and revivals, it isn’t entirely out of the question.
In November, Fox posted a picture of himself with Back to the Future co-star Lloyd, captioning the post “Doc and I are up to something heavy…” This caused fans online to believe that a reboot might be in the works. However, the announcement ended up being for a new line of Back to the Future merchandise, rather than a new project. While some were slightly disappointed, there were also rumors that Fox and Lloyd’s reunion could mean more than simply pushing merchandise.
Unlike other classic films that have recently been given reboots, like Ghostbusters and Top Gun, Back to the Future is one of the few successful franchises that hasn’t been touched in over three decades since the trilogy came to an end. Reboots are often hit-and-miss, with some being box office bombs while others outshine their original source material, and it’s this divide that has Back to the Future fans disagreeing on whether or not the franchise should make a comeback. However, if the Back to the Future tweets are any indication, the iconic trilogy will be staying the way it is for the foreseeable future.
