Criticism of Dwayne Johnson’s ill-fated Black Adam has resurfaced following the actor’s recent surprise announcement of a live-action Moana remake. Johnson is one of the most recognizable Hollywood actors working today, and in 2016, he lent his voice talents to Disney’s Moana, an animated film that was a hit at the box office and also popular upon its release on Disney Plus. Last year, Johnson attempted to make a leap into the superhero genre with Black Adam, a film that earned mostly negative reviews and underperformed at the box office.

Following Johnson’s shock announcement that he will be reprising his role as Maui in a live-action Moana remake, some fans have taken to social media to poke fun at Black Adam and Johnson himself. Check out some of the tweets below:

Black Adam’s Failure & Controversy Explained

Black Adam hit theaters last fall, earning mostly negative reviews from critics, but faring far better with general audiences. An impressive Rotten Tomatoes audience score didn’t help the film at the box office, however, and Black Adam grossed only $393 million worldwide. After reports surfaced that the movie did not recoup its budget, Johnson took to Twitter to refute the claim sharing an article that presented a different set of financial figures.

Regardless of which report is accurate, Johnson’s engagement with this narrative and the squabbling over what is ultimately a difference of only several tens of millions of dollars doesn’t make for great optics. Johnson also made no secret of his desire to have Henry Cavill return as Superman, a push that was met with enthusiasm at the time. It has since been revealed, however, that Johnson’s attempt to refocus the DCU around himself and Cavill didn’t fit into any larger franchise plans, especially following the ascension of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.

More recently, it was also reported that Johnson vetoed Black Adam post-credits cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which would have connected the two films. This new report also followed previous reports that Johnson himself is not a huge fan of Shazam in general. While Moana and Black Adam share very little in common, it’s clear that the announcement of a live-action remake for the former is not being met with a great deal of praise, at least in certain corners of the internet.
