From the moment Brie Larson was cast as Tess in Fast X, theories regarding her character’s family ties ran rampant, but her real connection to the franchise has now finally been revealed. The upcoming film features the largest and most impressive cast yet, bringing back franchise veterans while also introducing a host of fresh faces, including Larson’s Tess.

Now, as the Fast X release date approaches, Total Film (via GamesRadar) reveals that Tess actually isn’t related to Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner, as was widely theorized, but to Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody. Russell’s mysterious government agent was first introduced in Furious 7 and would go on to appear in The Fate of the Furious and briefly in F9. It’s currently unclear if Russell will reprise his role for Fast X, but it’s possible that Tess will be some kind of government operative like her father.

What Tess’ Mr. Nobody Connection Means For Fast X

Mr. Nobody was last seen in F9, frantically creating a video message for Dom and his crew moments before his plane went down. It’s still unclear if Russell’s mysterious character actually survived the crash, but the absence of a body would suggest that Mr. Nobody is still alive. Regardless of whether Mr. Nobody appears in Fast X, however, Tess could largely end up taking his place.

Due to his top-secret government work, Mr. Nobody always seems to have more information than any of the other characters, often pulling the strings as part of his larger schemes. It’s possible that Tess, should she also be a government operative, will end up playing a crucial role in the fight against Dante. With the ability to call upon the U.S. government to deliver cars, weapons, and equipment, she could end up being a key ally for Dom and his crew in terms of getting them the tools they need.

That being said, it’s also possible that Tess didn’t follow in her father’s footsteps and that she’s actually not associated with the government at all. Director Louis Leterrier has previously revealed, however, that regardless of whether she’s associated with the government or not, Tess will represent a “helping hand” for Dom in Fast X. While one major Fast X Tess mystery has now been solved, many questions still remain about Larson’s new franchise addition.
