“I’ve been in this industry for too long, but I’ve never seen a Christmas movie come across my lap. It’s never been on my radar. They happen. They’re occasional. But it’s never been something that’s come my way. So the fact that this one popped up, I was like ‘I can’t say no to this. I just can’t.’ And Dwayne is just unbelievable. He’s such a nice guy. He’s incredible at what he does actually, he’s so funny. He’s really charming and really knows. What [he] knows, he’s great at it and does it really, really well. And Jake Kasdan, the director, is just fantastic and the script is really funny. I just was like, I gotta take this opportunity. And it was fantastic. It was one of the best working experiences I ever had.”

What We Know About Red One

Red One reteams Johnson with Jake Kasdan, director of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. Long-time Fast & Furious franchise scribe Chris Morgan also penned the script, which Johnson has described as Hobbs & Shaw meets Miracle on 34th Street. So while Red One‘s plot is under wraps, the creative pedigree suggests a family-friendly film that is also action-packed and appealing to multiple demographics.

Johnson plays a character named Callum Drift, who looks to be possible security for Santa that has been seen squaring off against Krampus. Evans plays Jack O’Malley, who presents as an “everyman” type, possibly being presented with a world he never knew existed. Still, the true nature of their characters is unknown. However, Simmons is confirmed to play Santa Claus in Red One, with Hunt as Mrs. Claus. Photos of Simmons’ Santa have been shared, giving a glimpse at his unconventional take on the character, offering a muscular physique.

While Red One does not currently have a release date, it’s eyeing a holiday 2023 debut. The film will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video, and it’s likely to aim for a family-friendly rating, like PG-13 or even PG. With production confirmed to have wrapped, the next few months should also see the first glimpse at footage from the movie, giving a better sense of what Red One has been keeping under wraps.
