Chris Pratt Promises Super Mario Bros. Movie Won’t Ruin Childhoods

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was specifically designed to keep from spoiling anyone’s memories of Nintendo’s iconic plumber. The movie, which revolves around Mario’s quest to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, instead is meant to highlight the bright and lovable nature of the games. Along the way, it incorporates Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart, and several beloved other Mario games.

After the last Mario movie presented live-action versions of Mario and Luigi and proved to be a complete disaster, it is only natural to be wary of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That is especially true in light of the Chris Pratt Mario voice controversy. Yet Pratt told The Hollywood Reporter that no one will find their childhood memories ruined by the movie, much to his relief. Check out his quote below:

“It makes sense, I was pretty nervous when they offered it to me. I thought, ‘Wow, let’s not screw this up.’ That’s where it all comes from, I think. People are passionate about this character and they’ve probably seen some of their favorite IP getting screwed up. It’s kind of a cynical business. People make movies just because a title has reach. I saw it with the Lego Movie. I was like, ‘How are you going to make a movie about Legos? What is that?’ And then Chris [Miller] and Phil [Lord] made this incredible movie, I was part of it, I loved it. So it’s a big challenge. Just because something has reach doesn’t mean it’s going to be a good movie and there’s instances of people making bad movies and ruining people’s childhoods. So the pressure was on to not do that and, thankfully, we didn’t. I think the movie is fantastic and I think your childhood is firmly intact.”

The Early Reactions To The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Thankfully, it seems that Pratt’s report is right. Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s early reactions highlight a fun and remarkable experience filled with strong visual effects and welcomed fan service. Even after all the controversy around Pratt’s casting, the adaptation appears to have become a complete success.

The movie has not yet hit theaters, but these early reactions appear to indicate only a massive display of love for the film. While there has been criticism that its plot is somewhat middling, most critics appear to view the project positively, which is a sign that even its flaws are easily overcome. Considering that Nintendo has failed to put a well-received Mario project to the big screen so far, the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is as unexpected as it is rewarding.
