Dave Bautista confirms that My Spy 2, a sequel to the 2020 comedy that teamed him up with a 9-year-old girl, is set to begin filming soon.
Dave Bautista confirms that My Spy 2 is set to begin filming in just a few weeks. My Spy is an action comedy released in 2020 that saw Bautista portraying JJ, a rough around the edges CIA operative. JJ is tasked with surveilling a family, only for their precocious 9-year-old daughter to find out, leading to a story that thrives on humor through worlds colliding as she blackmails him for spy lessons. My Spy was directed by Peter Segal, known for 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, and fellow spy comedy Get Smart. Bautista led the cast, which included Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong.
In a recent interview with Collider, Bautista confirmed that a sequel, My Spy 2, is on the way. Furthermore, the wrestler-turned-actor stated that the start of production is only a few weeks away. A sequel to My Spy was initially discussed in 2020 following the streaming release of the film. Check out Bautista’s comments on My Spy 2 below:
Well I’m definitely gonna do the sequel to My Spy. I know that for sure because we start later next month. So I’m off to South Africa to do that, which I’ve been pushing for a very long time because I love the first film. It was so much fun. So we’re gonna do a sequel to that.
What To Expect From My Spy 2
When My Spy 2 was initially discussed, it was expected that much of the original cast would return, including Bautista and Coleman, reprising their roles as JJ and Sophie. Given the time frame of the sequel, Sophie is now likely to be around 12 or 13 years old, with a few more years of her and JJ getting to know each other. With their relationship growing between the films, it’s likely to play into the emotional elements of the story while also allowing for further humor with JJ coming to terms with Sophie growing up.
Additionally, the first movie’s plot saw Coleman’s Sophie blackmailing JJ into teaching her the ins and outs of being a spy, which has likely continued. My Spy ended with JJ moving in with Sophie and her mother, making it safe to assume that he continued to teach her about spying over the next few years. So with My Spy 2, Sophie will likely have a more comprehensive skill set. However, given her age, she’ll probably still be discouraged from using it by JJ and her mother.
My Spy 2 is also bringing back Segal to direct, once again adding his comedy experience to the production. The first film’s writers, Erich and Jon Hoeber, who penned films like RED and The Meg, have also written the sequel. And while Bautista mentioned that filming is set to start in South Africa, it could be one of many locations as movies about spies often turn into globetrotting adventures. The first film took place mainly in Chicago, so the sequel could go bigger with more wide-reaching locations. My Spy 2 currently doesn’t have a release date, but it will likely aim for sometime in 2024, with further details trickling in as production gets underway.
