Screen Rant presents a first look at the trailer for Deadland, an eerie action thriller premiering in SXSW’s Narrative Spotlight section on March 13.
Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive first look at the trailer for Deadland, which is set to have its world premiere at SXSW on March 13. Written and directed by Lance Larson as his feature film debut, Deadland follows U.S. Border agent Angel Waters (Roberto Urbina, Snowpiercer) as what should be a routine illegal crossing turns into his personal nightmare. Though the immigrant he took into custody is killed at a border outpost, his death is only the beginning of the suffering Angel must endure.
In addition to Urbina, Deadland stars a strong ensemble cast that includes McCaul Lombardi, Julieth Restrepo, Kendal Rae, Luis Chavez, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Manuel Uriza, Chris Mulkey, Chris White, and Dave Maldonado. As seen in the trailer below, the eerie story is equal parts thriller and psychological character study.
More About Deadland at SXSW
The trailer for Deadland, which Screen Rant had the honor of exclusively premiering above, lays out the atmosphere and tone of the haunting new film. In a lonely motel room, the repeated whisper of “It’s just a shadow, right?” alerts the audience to the ghost story that’s about to unfold. While Angel Waters (Urbina) tries and fails to bury the past, the rest of his team is experiencing bloody consequences in the present. As he faces off against an immigrant whose chant of “I am the roots” echoes through the trailer, Deadland‘s physical border becomes metaphysical as well.
Set against the backdrop of the harsh and desolate Rio Grande river, Deadland uses the American and Mexican border as a launching pad to explore not only immigration but identity. While Angel deals with the tragedy before his eyes, his own family history as the child of immigrants and his estranged relationship with his father Ignacio (played by Uriza) are brought to the forefront.
SXSW will serve as the host for the world premiere of Deadland on March 13 at 11am, where it will be highlighted in the Narrative Spotlight at the Paramount Theatre. The festival will also showcase plenty of other hotly anticipated titles, from television shows like Destin Daniel Cretton’s American Born Chinese to the world premiere of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Deadland has a runtime of 91 minutes and is not yet rated.
