While her popular talk show has kept her busy, Drew Barrymore teases an acting return if her best friend and fellow actor Adam Sandler was in on it.
Drew Barrymore teases her acting return with long-time friend and collaborator Adam Sandler. One of the longest working actors in Hollywood, Barrymore found fame at 7-years-old after her performance in Steven Spielberg’s beloved E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. A member of the Barrymore family of actors, she shortly became a household name for starring in Charlie’s Angels (2000), Never Been Kissed (1999), Poison Ivy (1992), Scream (1996) and Ever After (1998). Her role in 2009’s Grey Gardens earned her critical acclaim, for which she received a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award. Barrymore’s more recent work includes the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet, which was canceled in 2019. She announced an indefinite hiatus from acting in 2021, as her titular syndicated talk show took off.
Now, speaking with PEOPLE, Drew Barrymore teases her acting return, on the condition that good friend and fellow actor Adam Sandler is involved. While hosting her current talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show has kept her busy, she says that she loves to direct, and would like to return to that side of filmmaking. She made her directorial debut in 2009 with Whip It. Acting, on the other hand, has to include Sandler for Barrymore to be involved. Check out what Barrymore had to say below:
“I loved directing, maybe [I’d do] commercials and TV… As soon as you talk about Adam Sandler, I’m like, ‘Oh, well maybe. Sure”
Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore’s Relationship History
Sandler and Barrymore have a long history of working together, with 1998’s The Wedding Singer marking their first collaboration. Widely considered Sandler’s best comedy, he stars as wedding singer Robbie Hart opposite Barrymore’s Julia Sullivan, a waitress he falls in love with after realizing his fiancé is not for him. Grossing $123 million worldwide, The Wedding Singer was also well-received by critics. Having undeniable on-screen chemistry, Sandler and Barrymore later reunited in 2004 to make 50 First Dates, where Sandler plays Henry, a retired marine and overzealous womanizer who falls in love with Lucy (Barrymore). However, Henry’s plans to woo Lucy are complicated when he discovers she has amnesia, and wakes up every day without the memory of what happened before, forgetting about their first date in the process.
A decade later, Sandler and Barrymore found themselves in love again on the big screen with Blended. The rom-com follows single parents Jim (Sandler) and Lauren (Barrymore) as they get set up on a blind date together. After going horrendously, the pair agree to never see each other again. To their surprise, they must learn to get along after winding up at the same African safari resort. Although Sandler and Barrymore’s reunion was highly-anticipated, Blended was received poorly by critics, and performed the same in theaters, underperforming against its budget.
While their most recent collaboration was a slight disappointment, Sandler and Barrymore have the opportunity for a perfect comeback in the future. However, it will most likely be a while before that happens, as Barrymore has her schedule full with her hit show, The Drew Barrymore Show. Still, it’s exciting to learn Barrymore would not turn down another opportunity to work with Sandler. Based on the critical and general response to Blended, the pair may take a different path and do something more serious. Even still, seeing the two fall in love on-screen will likely be in the cards. While Barrymore’s acting hiatus might go on a few more years, her interest in working with Sandler again promises a return for the iconic actor.
