Elijah Wood reveals whether he would return as Frodo for more The Lord of the Rings movies. Wood portrayed Frodo among a massive ensemble cast that helped bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epics to the big screen, beginning with 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The series filmed all three installments together and released them in successive years, becoming a cultural phenomenon that culminated in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King winning 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
While speaking with Extra at the premiere of Yellowjackets season 2, Wood was asked about a potential return to The Lord of the Rings franchise, with the actor responding positively. While he seems uninterested in a reboot of the franchise, potentially tarnishing the beloved series, he’s not opposed to playing Frodo again. And with the actor having previously returned to the franchise already for 2013’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, his words carry sincerity. Check out Wood’s comments on returning as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings below:
“Reboot… I don’t know about that, but if there’s more films that potentially involve Frodo, I would be down.”
Will The Lord Of The Rings Franchise Bring Back Elijah Wood?
The Lord of the Rings franchise has found renewed life recently, beginning with Amazon’s pricey series The Rings of Power. And while The Rings of Power season 2 is likely to debut in 2024, Wood’s Frodo is unlikely to appear on the show. The Rings of Power takes place during Middle-earth’s Second Age, which spans over 3,000 years, with Frodo’s time in the Shire taking place late in the Third Age, meaning the time between events could be too vast to include him.
However, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are planning an expansive The Lords of the Rings universe. They intend on fleshing out the world of Middle-earth with new stories being explored through various movies. While this may present an opportunity for Wood to return to the franchise, some feel it could tarnish Tolkien’s work by diluting the rich world he crafted. Still, the newly announced films aren’t said to be reboots, skirting Wood’s concerns.
The Lord of the Rings could also offer other opportunities for Wood to reprise his role as Frodo. Given the series has thrived in other forms of media, with several video games being produced, including the upcoming Gollum game, Wood could potentially return to voice the character in a game. Still, with the newly announced movie plans for The Lord of the Rings, there could easily be opportunities for Wood to return to the franchise.
