Elijah Wood Unpacks His Reaction To New LOTR Movies

Elijah Wood unpacks his mixed reaction to the recently-announced Lord of the Rings movies. Wood played the brave young hobbit Frodo Baggins who is tasked with taking the One Ring to Mount Doom in Peter Jackson’s landmark Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel. Because of how highly-regarded Jackson’s trilogy is and how well it has held up over time, it was surprising when Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced that new Lord of the Rings movies are in development.

Now, shortly after the new Lord of the Rings movies were announced, Wood is reacting to the studio’s plans in a profile by GQ. The Lord of the Rings star’s reaction is mixed, saying he is both “surprised” and “fascinated.” While Wood says the motivation to make more movies is “a desire to make a lot of money,” he recognizes that “great art can come from commerce.” Read his full reaction below:

I’m fascinated and I’m excited. I hope it’s good. I’m surprised—I don’t know why I’m surprised because, of course there would be more movies. Obviously at the core of that, is a desire to make a lot of money. It’s not that a bunch of executives are like, “Let’s make really awesome art.” And, again, not begrudging anybody because, of course, it is commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So those two things are not mutually exclusive.

[Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy] didn’t come out of that place. It came out of a passion for these books and wanting to see them realized. And I hope that that is ultimately what will drive everything forward with whatever these subsequent movies are. I just hope that it’s the same motivating factor at its core, whenever they hire a screenwriter and a filmmaker—that it is with reverence for Tolkien’s material and enthusiasm to explore it.

Everything We Know About The New Lord of the Rings Movies

The only thing that’s been confirmed about the new Lord of the Rings movies is there will be “multiple” movies based on the works of Tolkien – both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. They will likely be unrelated to other Middle-earth media, including Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the upcoming anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. While details are scarce, it’s unlikely this new generation of movies will be a straight-up remake of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which Jackson already adapted.

Without a writer or director attached, it’s unclear if the new Lord of the Rings movies will be spearheaded by someone with great reverence and enthusiasm for Tolkien’s source material, just like Jackson had. However, Jackson and his Lord of the Rings co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens say Warner Bros. is keeping them “in the loop every step of the way” regarding the new Lord of the Rings movies. Whatever direction the new films decide to head in, they should be handled by creatives with a passion for Tolkien’s work, just as Wood and fans are hoping for.
