Harrison Ford explains how Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s de-aging technology uses his actual face. Ford was 39 when he starred in the original Indiana Jones adventure, Raiders of the Lost Ark, way back in 1981. Now an 80-year-old Ford is coming back for one last go-around as the famed archaeologist/adventurer in the highly-anticipated Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Though 80-year-old Ford is the main star of the new Indiana Jones film, the movie will feature a supporting appearance by a much-younger incarnation of the actor, thanks to the use of de-aging technology.
Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Ford addressed Dial of Destiny’s de-aging tech (at around the 43-second mark of the above clip), and gave a brief rundown of how it actually works, revealing the way the technique employs old footage of his actual face to wind back the years. That is my actual face. At that age. They have this artificial intelligence program. It can go through every foot of film Lucasfilm owns, because I did a bunch of movies for them. They have all this footage, including film that wasn’t printed. They could mine it from where the light is coming from, the expression. But that’s my actual face. I put little dots on my face and I say the words and they make it. It’s fantastic.
Can Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny Recapture The Franchise’s Magic?
The first three Indiana Jones films were not only huge box office smashes, they also established the character of Indy as a pop culture icon. It was understandable then that people were excited when, back in 2010, Ford returned to play his other most iconic character one more time in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Unfortunately, though Crystal Skull did do very well at the box office, it contained many elements that disappointed those who had been looking forward to seeing Indy on another adventure.
Now the Indiana Jones franchise gets a Crystal Skull do-over with Dial of Destiny. Ford is obviously back for one last go-around, but director Steven Spielberg is not back, as James Mangold takes over helming duties. Mangold of course is renowned as the filmmaker who gave Wolverine a memorable send-off in Logan, and the hope is that he can pull off a similar trick with Indiana Jones. The main job for Mangold is to re-establish the grittiness of the original Indiana Jones films, after Crystal Skull pushed things in a decidedly cartoonish and silly direction.
Getting back to old school Indiana Jones in terms of tone and story are of course big parts of the equation if Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is to succeed in redeeming the franchise, but another key is giving Jones a good female character to spar with on-screen. The ‘80s Indy movies all had memorable main female characters, but Crystal Skull missed the mark in that regard, choosing instead to mostly pair Indy with the divisive character of Mutt (Shia LaBeouf). Dial of Destiny will go back to basics however, casting Phoebe Waller-Bridge to give the film a strong female presence, and hopefully bring back the almost screwball comedy energy that was the secret sauce of Raiders and Temple of Doom (and to a lesser extent The Last Crusade).
